I'm not getting how the pictured oil cooler works.
A coolant line is shown running to the sandwich-adapter between the engine and the oil filter. Are there galleys in the plate that the oil is passing through to cool down on its way into or out of the oil filter?

Here's the real part numbers. Pulled this from the Arabian Nissan FAST. All parts can now be ordered through Nissan North America. It will cost you over half (~$400) of what the SUPERIOR Nissan Motorsports oil cooler runs.

So what's the verdict? Is this Nissan oil cooler better than the Setrab coolers that are sold aftermarket under different names or what? Right now I'm looking into a 25 row with thermo-blocking plate. Would this unit be better or worse?

These new OEM water-oil cooler will probably keep oil temps down during hot climate/ stop-go driving or maybe even some spirited type driving. No way will it be up to par for any kind of track use. Since I will not be tracking my car, I think I'm going to buy this instead of an air-oil cooler.

Aftermarket air to oil cooler better for keeping oil temps down. OEM water to oil better for stabilizing oil temps. No track use just street OEM, track use aftermarket.

Hmm... interesting... waiting to see how it works out for others... my Setrab is amazing but it does take a while for it to warm up in the colder air (no block off plate). This would make oil changes easier too.

Since I am not a gearhead, any one would like to chime in and discuss if this 2012 factory cooler can be retrofitted to pre-2012 Zs. If so, what is the level of difficulty involved in self-install. If at dealer or shop, ballpark cost for part+labor.

If you track or do anything outside of minor spirited driving an aftermarket is better. If you don't??? Then why in the hell did you buy 34 row cooler? A 19 row would have been more than sufficient. Shoot you might've gotten away with a 9row and saved yourself some Real cash.

If you read somehwre in page one I wrote the I had asked the head of my service dept. They said its not retrofitable nor will they warranty a retrofit it were attempted and successful. Under his claims the plumbing was changed in order to add this minimalistic oil cooler. Obviously it isn't as good as it should be for enthusiasts so they can sell the NISMO 34 row part to enthusiasts. Now they make more money because now the original cooler has to be removed and its probably a highly complex job??? Nissan is smart at jerkin'da custies. Lol. If you're an enthusiast? Get an 11 and earlier and add your own. If you are a casual Z lover or are just buying the next new thing for bling or swagg or whatever? Get the 12. Personally, I think the 09 Suspension was brolic n kicks my 11 suspensions ***. My 09 felt more pure in the handling dept. even though the 11 still feels incredible, Nissan nailed it year one and the baby complainers made them soften the suspension. Lil girlie men!!!!!! Seriously, some Z owners need Hanz and Franz to "pump them up". Lmfao.

The so called Nismo cooler wasn't even designed by the Japanese Nismo division. It was designed by Nissan Motorsports in America. It uses a standard 34r Setrab core with SS lines and a generic sandwich adapter, the same basic thing you can get with most aftermarket kits! There is nothing special about it. Get over that. The so called "enthusiasts" who buy them know nothing about car mods, they just simply get it to chase after the names. It's no different than buying a Maserati even though it is a big piece of poop. I don't know what's worse, the Nismo fanboys or the Mugen lovers.

Careful now ... some of us love all things Italian. And truthfully, Maserati's are really not that big! :icon17:
