Automatic Car Starter on a Manual

Hey guys! I just got my car starter on my manual and I love it!...He put a hidden on/off switch on there to where if I'm taking my car to a body shop I can turn the switch to off. So if the mechanic leaves the car in 1st and accidentally presses the auto starts it wont even start! But i just got to remember to turn that switch everytime i leave it with someone. Thought I would share my expierence. Just in time for the winter!:tiphat:

Sounds fool proof.

cossie1600 10-08-2011 10:57 PM

Last time I dealt with that, my cousin stuffed the car into a parked lexus with one touch of a button

Which system did you go with?

Autopage XT-74LCD. I used to have a viper alarm/car starter on my g35

My friend started his and it drove off a ledge.

A proper install should only start if you are in neutral.

And it's not hard to do, especially with the feedback that comes from the trans

NYBladeZ 10-10-2011 01:41 PM

I guess if you're meticulous and always leave your car in neutral you wouldn't have a problem. Still the story of the black mustang flying into a lake causes me to take caution although most horror stories are the result of stupid people not faulty auto starts.

MattP725 10-10-2011 01:56 PM

Forget the gear issue, I am more concerned about someone being able to drive away with the car. Everything I have read leaves me to believe that the smart key anti-theft will be deactivated to start our cars.

The keyed cars obviously have the brake pedal bypass but since we have no "key" we have no way to utilize that (unless something new came out).

if you have the parking brake on, which you should no matter what if you have a manual then it shouldnt go very far if the car is in gear......

adampetrasek 10-10-2011 05:47 PM

The reason i own a z now is because my supra went threw a body shop storefront after a remote start. Granted I had no switch or neutral check in place. Wish I did..... But i' ll never put a remote start on a manual car again, no matter how many safety checks there are... Way to traumatic to watch a supra take off into a building!

did you have your parking brake on?

MattP725 10-11-2011 11:22 AM

Most people that leave the cars in gear dont use the parking brake... that is why they leave them in gear.

I always do! but the owner of the body shop who moved my car, left the car in 1st, and did not set the parking break....even tho he knew i had a remote start. He should have set the parking break, and i should have never assumed it wasn't in gear since i did not drive it last. Lesson Learned!!! More then $10 grand in damages just to the car. Took the repair money, sold the damaged car to the body shop, and put a down payment on the Z :happydance:

Disagree because then the point would be moot... with the pb on and the car in gear you are not going anywhere even if you remote start it. The car would stall and maybe lurch a bit but wouldn't move. And on the hill point, no I wouldn't just leave it in gear but I don't ever leave it in gear.

I always park my car in gear with the parking break on!

ChrisSlicks 04-30-2012 09:16 PM

Tie the neutral sensor off the transmission into a relay to prevent any accidents. The switch is nice but sooner or later someone will forget.

I hate it when people leave my car in gear...............I feel it is just lazy.....

Isn't it considering proper parking technique with a standard to leave it in gear?

Yes. It is the failsafe if the e-brake should fail, i.e. e.g. parked on a hill.

It's also proper technique to use the e-brake on a auto when parked but few actually do :)

fuct 05-03-2012 08:42 AM

are you using your parking brake now mattp725?

Lol! I tried explains this to my gf. "Why do the emergency brake if u can just leave it in park?" Besides the fact that's it's put there for a reason I asked her if she parked on a hill or a curb and had 2 use two hands to move the shifter out of parked followed by a loud bang? Yea that's why u use the emergency brake.

Yep. People aren't really aware that their "transmission park" lock is just a little pin. You are holding 4000lbs of steel with a 1/2 inch steel pin! They can and do fail especially if you let the car roll on a hill after letting off the brake to let the transmission take the load. Fortunately they are pretty strong given their small size.
