Grinding into 5th?

So I've had my Z for about 1.5 years and 18000 miles, so I believe I know when it is different.

I went TDY and while I was gone my wife took my Z to the dealer to get the oil change. Since the car was over 15000 miles they sold her on the whole service. Which is fine. Anyways when I got back and driving the car around I notice that every once in a while when I shift into 5th I get a "loose grinding feel". It's not the normal grinding I get when I miss a shift it's almost more of a crunching feel than grinding.

I took it in today because I felt that it was some sort of adjustment thingfrom the service. The car is under warranty and I didn't thing much of it. Well the service rep started going through everything that they did in the last service in order to claim that they didn't do anything to the trans or clutch.

Now it's starting to bother me cause I wasn't an azz customer I didnt yell bla or complain. I simply described the problem and when it started. I felt like it was her trying to put it back on me for grinding my gears and defend their dealership fromaybe causing the problem.

Just fix my damn car and there won't be any problems.

m4a1mustang 10-06-2011 07:30 PM

Interesting. So they didn't change the trans fluid?

I know back in 2009 there were a number of 6MTs replaced due to faulty 5th gear synchros. I thought that was corrected for 2010, though.

Lemers 10-06-2011 07:32 PM

My was an early 2010. Built Oct 09? Bought Jan 10

m4a1mustang 10-06-2011 07:34 PM

It's under warranty so just make sure they document it.

Lemers 10-06-2011 07:37 PM

That's what she said.

Really the service clerk was a female and she said " If they can't figure out at least it documented"

Davey 10-06-2011 07:47 PM

Can you reproduce the problem for the tech? If so, make them fix it.

If it's "every few times I drive" maybe you can't reproduce it yet, but more than likely you will soon. At least it's not at 58,000 miles! :D

Lemers 10-06-2011 07:52 PM

I've got 60k under my warranty. But like I've said before. The first time Nissan says it's not covered by warranty then I'm bring out the mod parts wish-list.

Davey 10-06-2011 07:57 PM

So... You're basically daring them to deny a claim so you can get modding. :D

Lemers 10-06-2011 08:01 PM

Why not! My other opportunity is Im trying to get assigned to Germany in a year and a half. I'd be taking it with me and Im sure I'd be voiding the warranty somehow while overseas. So I may start modding if that happens.

MattP725 10-06-2011 09:19 PM

First thing I thought of was 5th gear synco too... get that replaced, it will only get worse and cause more damage.

Red__Zed 10-06-2011 10:22 PM

Whether they changed anything or not shouldn't matter... If it's acting up, it's acting up.

Wonder if your car got a rough test drive afterwards:ugh2:

Lemers 10-06-2011 10:25 PM

That would piss me off if they did give it a rough test drive

Red__Zed 10-06-2011 10:29 PM

Fwiw mine developed the same funky shot going into 5th out of the blue...literally didn't drive the car for a couple days, and all of a sudden 5th barely worked anymore....so it may be somewhat random.

Third dealer I went to finally took care of me. It is a known issue, even if most dealers won't admit it. Hopefully your dealer will take good care of you.

Lemers 10-06-2011 10:41 PM

I hope Nissan has a database of issues like this so that other dealers can see issues that happen else where

They do. It's an expensive fix though, so they try to avoid it.

Lemers 10-06-2011 10:53 PM

What azzholes if they try to avoid it

Red__Zed 10-06-2011 10:54 PM

Every manufacturer does it. Just have to be enough of a pain and they will hook you up

Lemers 10-07-2011 11:05 AM

Stupid dealer. I dropped the car off yesterdayafternoon and they still havent even looked at it. A quick look to see if they need to order parts or a quick adjustment. I don't understand these guys.

Lemers 10-07-2011 03:11 PM

So I got a call from the service department and they can't find anything wrong with the Z. But they did tell me that it was in sport mode and it shouldn't be. I asked why and I got "well sport mode is for things like mountain climbing". Next their gonna tell me that VDC should only be on during snowy weather.

Davey 10-08-2011 02:38 PM

The service department is completely clueless. Is there another dealer near you? I'd be taking mine somewhere else if possible... They sound like total idiots.

Daishi 10-08-2011 02:49 PM

The problem with intermittent issues that dealers have to take for a test drive to diagnose is they dont drive the car much. Car manufacturers dont pay the techs crap for test drives so the techs go on the shortest test drive and if they dont feel it they say could not duplicate customer concern and call it a day so they dont lose time. I can almost guarantee you they took it for a 2-3 mile test drive, didnt feel it and wrote could not duplicate customer concern and didnt look at anything else.

Lemers 10-08-2011 02:53 PM

It's fine that they couldn't duplicate the issue. It the stupid S mode is on response that ticked me off. I mean come on, they think I don't know anything about the car I bought.

Perfourmance 10-08-2011 03:04 PM

yeah, mountain climbing...and probably off-roading in general, lol

wow, sorry to hear dude g'luck! keep us posted on the issue

Davey 10-08-2011 03:24 PM

"S" mode is obviously for skiing. Duh. :ugh2:

I thought it was for going stealth:shakes head:. Should have read the owners manual:icon14:

toplessdottie 10-13-2011 02:51 PM

I just picked up an '09 and my 5th gear shows similar symptoms. When I'm just putzing aroung it goes in pretty nice, but under just a little load (not crazy) there is a noticeable "notch" into 5th. When merging onto the highway in 4th in high revs, shifting into 5th produces a horrible grinding sound...... so I skip 5th and go into 6th.

Taking it into my local dealership soon. Let me know what you find out, so I can provide more details to my tech.
Thanks

Lemers 10-13-2011 04:34 PM

They said the tech couldn't reproduce it. It seems to do it more in the beginning of the week than at the end. Maybe my driving patterns play into that. I mainly drive to and from work and on weekends the z sits in the garage while I ride in the familymobile.

They said that if it continues I would need to have the tech go with me for a ride to see if it happens.
