If he tracks the car where hot lapping is involved, sure he would want to replace it. Most of us don't do that. The VLSD is fine for spirited street driving and things like dragon runs. It's not the most optimal thing out there but its nowhere near as lame as an open diff. I happen to think the sport package is a pretty good deal.

Depending on how hard you drive you can really overheat the VLSD, even on the street. I did it last year at ZDayZ, and there have been other discussions from 2009/2010 about it.

But I do agree the Sport Package is a great value. For MOST people the VLSD will be sufficient for fun, but any sustained, really spirited driving or tracking will require a better diff. My guess is only 5% of the Sport Package owners ever push the VLSD beyond its limits on a somewhat regular basis.
