limp mode with oil cooler and uprev tune
hey all. okay here goes. i did some searching and found out some interesting stuff but nothing quite like what im experiencing. first off here are my mods list: stiilen gen 3 cai, top speed exhaust with y-pipe, kinetix hfc's, 36 row oil cooler kit from z1 motorsporst and uprev tune done by omar at uprev in austin.
heres my problem: the last mod i got was my oil cooler kit from z1. it is their largest one and also the one they strongly recommended. my car, like many others, was suffering from high oil temps. i live in south texas so 100+ degree temps are normal on any given day. i installed the kit exactly like the instructions that were provided said. once the oil kit was installed my cruising temps went from the 220-250 range to the 180- 200 range and only get up to 220 if im really pushing the car. the funny thing is that when at idle in traffic or any other reason if i let it sit too long the water temps soar up higher than i have ever seen on this car and the oil temp also rises. so i figure that the problem is that the oil cooler is heating up the radiator and causing my water temps to get too high. i figure there isnt much i can do about that without adding something like purple ice to the water or whatever (or getting upgraded fans and radiator) but now the car seems to go into limp mode frequently. i can feel it become VERY VERY sluggish. heres another funny thing though. i have five maps that were put on by uprev. the first being my "tuned" map and the second being my "stock" map. the two maps honestly never felt very different and i always questioned if it was worth it but when the car feels sluggish, if i switch to my "stock" map it seems to get it away from limp mode and give it its life back. now, before i purchased the oil cooler my car never went into limp mode that i know of. it always seemed sluggish in the hot temps but nothing like it does now. so i did some searching and found some people saying that air intake temps can cause the car to go into limp mode. so i pulled my bumper back off and examined the oil cooler lines. the oil cooler lines sat right up against the passenger side intake filter and tube. this was the path on the z1 instructions so it was the path i chose for my initial install. i did my best to re route the lines to get them off of the intake. i also went a step further and routed some air ducting paths that i found in the diy section of this forum so that i could get more air to the filters. after all this the problem seems a bit better but not solved. has anyone else had issues like this? i am frustrated and am on the edge of removing the oil cooler. thanks guys and sorry for the dragging paragraph. |

That's really odd... I'd probably get it retuned because it sounds like the fuel map is off... you shouldn't limp even at 250.
I def wouldn't let the oil line rub against the intake but again that shouldn't affect it to that degree... I would be safe to say that the oil cooler isn't the problem (unless you didn't add another qt+ to the car and it is running low). Have you done any other breather mods since your uprev? |

the only breathing mods done since the uprev is the ducting i created to get more air to the filters. the cooler was the last actual part installed though. but now that you mention fuel map the car does bog slightly every once in a while when going into first gear. thought it might just be my error though. the oil however is spot on right in the middle of the dipstick so i dont think thats the issue. i just dont have the money to take it back to uprev right now

I'd think your a/f ratio is off personally. See if you can get the shop to re-run the dyno and leave it on the stock map for now (assuming that helps you). If the stock map runs fine it is likely that you need a retune.

is that normal for an uprev tune to go off like that? it seemed okay at first but now the car just seems so temperamental. when it runs good its a beast but when its not it just feels like there is no life at all to it. I would hate to think my money was wasted at uprev.
