Hi all, been away for awhile. Last week I traded in my 2009 SP A/T for a 2011 SP M/T. First time I've ever traded in a car for a new car of the same model but love is love. Anyway was worried when I heard first gear whining after driving for awhile, just first no other gears. I've read a few threads and just to be sure and ease my mind, first gear whine when warmed up is normal, right?
Yes I have OCD, but I love my Z, please help me sleep ![]() Thank you |

I have a similar noise, however there is no problem with the transmission. These manual transmissions are somewhat noisy and unrefined but unless you have issues selecting gears, you are fine!

One thing I am going to is replace my trans fluid with some Redline Synthetic MTF fluid, there are a few members that have done that swap and report much less noise and smoother shifts so I figure it is worthwhile. Just waiting a few thousand more miles until my engine oil change which is when I'll do the trans fluid change too.

My OCD took over and off to the dealership i went, they were nice enough to drain both engine oil and trans fluid to check for any metal in the fluids. All is well, their GT-R expert explained how the gears were set up and why they sound the way they do. So i will give her(my Z) a bath and smack through the gears with a smile.

How many miles, Ricky? Give it a little time. Me, I'm usually out of 1st gear so quickly I don't even think I could tell you if it makes noise or not.

At 900 miles, the transmission is still on the tail-end of wearing in.
So many people think that you break in an engine on a new car. Yes, you do, but you are also breaking in the clutch, brakes, wheel-bearings, axles (some cars), differential(s), and all the gears/bearings in the transmission. Varying your speed, not loading the transmission/rear-end 100%, not launching or shifting it in a way that would "shock" the drive-line, and making sure to accelerate smoothly AND decelerate smoothly (helps the rear faces of the gears in the drive-line wear in, as well as providing more vacuum in the engine to suck the piston-rings against the cylinder walls) will yield a drive-line that has the most potential to operate quietly. I know many people say engines break in in a few miles, blah blah blah, but that was not my experience with my Z06. It sooted up the tail-pipes badly for the first 2-400 miles. Burned through about 1/2 quart of oil. Changed the oil at 600 miles, and it has not used a drop since, and the tail-pipes are properly soot-free even after spirited driving. I think a lot of "noise" has to do with the break-in process, although the pre-load and after-load on the gears in the transmission, as well as the profile of the teeth, are suspect as well. Not necessarily bad, very likely "nature of the beast" type stuff. |

So far so good -- and on the 370Z, happy to report ZERO oil consumption ![]()
