That's probably the case that they don't know how to drive.

I have to say, I don't *like* the fact that modern transmissions are so over-syncronized. They basically gloss over crap shifting behavior, which not only means people never figure out how to do it right, it also makes it hard to feel what's really going on . They feel too slick to me - I'm used to needing to get the timing and speeds just right before it will do a nice gear change. I'm not trying to be a curmudgeon, but I just think a nicely timed "snick" into gear is one of the great satisfactions in driving...

I'm having a real problem with grinding gear and mis-shifting from 1st to 2nd (only when shifting at redline) Does the B&M help in this area?? or is there a problem with my tranny? This really takes the enjoyment out of driving the car
On a side note I installed the Nismo shift knob which is lighter then stock, I'm sure this isn't helping, so I just ordered a TWM counterweighted shift knob, hoping this will help get it in gear better. Trying to decide if a short shifter will help or make it worse I've had short shifters before in 2 of my mustangs and in my GTI, and they all seam to work pretty good.

As far as my experience with MT cars, let put it this way, I've never owned an Auto. In the last 16 years I've had 9 cars, Z being the 10th, all MT cars. The 1st to 2nd shift in this car really sucks

Hey Minicobra,

I am not 100% on this, but I don't see how a short shifter would help (at least directly) with the synchronization of the gears. All that the short shifter does is reduce the travel length between gear changes at the shifter knob.

The grinding means that first and second gears, at the RPM you are shifting at, are not perfectly synchronized. As I think about this, maybe the heavy flywheel we have in the Z could be part of the problem? When you clutch in at a high RPM in first, the flywheel's momentum carries the RPM too high, to a point where it is so close to red line (or at it) that the synchronization between gears is not ideal? Just thinking out loud. Are you hitting red line when clutching in?

Probably pretty close to it, I think I have my shift light set at 6800 rpm, so by the time I respond, probably hitting 7000-7200 rpm.

Only reason I think a short shifter may help is that when I go from first to second, if my arm is not on the center counsel, my elbow will make contact with the seat back. That plus the lightweight Nismo knob, I'm sure is contributing to me having to really use a lot of force to make sure it goes in gear and not mis-shift.

Sorry big guy.

I emailed a couple of forum sponsors about it and haven't had any luck with organizing a group buy, so I took it upon myself to do this. If this is frowned upon, let me know and I can put a kibosh on it.

All I'm doing, since I do some freelance/contract work for B&M, and know most of the guys there in the engineering, sales and marketing department, they let me buy stuff from their store at a discount, and sometimes if I buy a lot of stuff they give me their "employee" pricing. All I'm doing is passing along my discount code to the folks who've signed up for the GB.

Again, let me know if this isn't cool. I'm not making any $$$ off of this, and you can probably confirm with the members here who've participated that no money exchanges hands between me and them. I'm a guest here and I hope I have not offended anyone.
