09 6Spd Transmission issue
The car has about 9000+ miles. Bone stock. It has never been abused, no burn outs, racing, launch, never has been drag raced. It has been a real treat to drive the car around town, it had been very reliable up until few days.
While backing out of my driveway, I noticed it made a really strange grinding sound. I didn't pay much attention. Then I took it to the dealer today for some service and I asked the tech to check out the sound from reverse gear, he didn't like it. While the tech was pulling it in, he heard abnormal sound from 1st gear/low speed as well. I hadn't even noticed the 1st gear sound. I asked them to inspect it and got out of there. Dealer called couple hours ago. There is an issue with the transmission. It's being replaced under warranty. New one has been ordered already and will be here by the weekend. I am not too concerned, I just thought I'd share this experience. |
Bad clutch or slave cylinder that may have caused an issue?
I've got 24k miles on my 09 6spd without any issues. I did however replace my clutchline with the Z1 SS one with Motul fluid about 10k miles ago though. |

I am not sure what caused it, man. I mean, everything felt normal. Even with a "bad" trans, the car drove smooth. Dealer diagnosed it and didn't want to take any chances. I'll go with their diagnoses and just have them replace it. |
ghost- GL with the repairs and good ear! glad you took it in time.

What a pain, Ghost. Good thing you heard the noise and are getting it fixed under warranty.
I just hit 9k on my 2009 as well. Now I'm nervous! |

Looking around online and asking people who one these cars, my car sounds like an isolated case. Probably a bad apple from factory. |
Update:
Dealer got the transmission, but won't be able to install is until monday, so I asked the dealer if I could drive the car until then and track it for a day, they said that'll be just fine. With Intake system and HFC installed, I was excited to drive it. I have to say, every person (especially the Nismo folks) should at least get intakes and HFC for these cars, what a difference it made. So I took it to the track today. Man, this car is impressive!!! At this particular track, stock C6 Z06 with a good driver runs 1:18xx, my best, in traffic, was 1:20.07 ... with consistent 1:21 laps. I was smiling the entire time. BTW I did add an oilcooler. Oil temps stayed around 240+ I also have SS brake lines. Anyway, I am extremely pleased with the car. Even with a "bad" trans, it ran perfect. I will be dropping it off for the trans replacement. |

Though the transmission is still not installed. I decided to modify the clutch and flywheel. It'll be in today or tomorrow and the car will be back in the shop next week. It's strange, car run absolutely normal with a supposedly bad transmission. I've been driving it daily, no issues whatsoever. At any rate, I wonder if there is anything else I should mod while the trans is out of the car...? |
Can you let me know what you find? I am looking for a used 2009 model and noticed a sound which may or may not be similar to what you have experienced.
While test driving the car, I heard a noise that I can only describe as a low, grinding noise (like grrrrrr) that is coming from somewhere in the drivetrain... it could be the differential or the transmission. I couldn't really determine the location of it. It's noticeable only during launch from 1st and most low speed. When the car speeds up and I'm in 2nd+ gears, I don't hear it anymore or not audible enough. I have driven 350z's and I don't ever remember such a noise and I would suspect that 370z's are the same. Can anymore confirm or explain what this noise may be? The dealer says their techs checked out the car and it's fine. It's a certified pre-owned car and still have warranty left for up to 35k+ miles or 3 years or so. Would such a warranty cover possible tranmission replacement? Thanks! |
