Default Neutral drop in the 7AT

Not sure if this is the right section for this, but I'm wondering... How bad is it to be neutral dropping in the 7a/t?

Lately I've been flying in tiptronic, mostly using paddleshifters, but sometimes I get lazy and leave it in "D". Since it's become a habit to either paddleshift or use the shifter to upshift, I've ended up popping her into neutral & then back into drive a few times now. Usually with a 2-4K RPM gain. Which means I'd go from approx 3-4K RPM to 5-8K and then drop it back. This is accidental

End result of such a drop is a hard kick & sometimes a tire squeal. What I'm wondering is how bad is this for my tranny? Should I worry?

Try not to do this. If it happens, at least let the rpm's drop before shifting it back to drive. It's the shifting back to "D" that will put a lot stress on the transmission.

I went to neutral drop my work van one day, going at 60km/h. Skipped neutral, landed into reverse. It was hilarious. Van stalled, and wouldn't start for a few minutes. Eventually I got it going and no tranny issues yet, & it's been almost a year now. I also drift the van in the wintertime.

Sideways in a big white van = awesome fun

A kid in my highschool was showing off his new at that time Grand Cherokee. He tried to do a J-turn but failed! His transmission pretty much exploded and left bits and pieces on the parking lot.

@scgracer - no, this is not what I want lol. In my car, I do it accidentally, and in the van it was a 1-time thing.

@cmike2780 - a friend of mine did the exact same thing at his highschool last year. In the same car. Thats just too funny
