Default Transitioning from Drive to Neutral Question

Hey guys,

Have a question that may seem stupid but I have an A7, recently while driving in automatic mode (shifter is in D) I tapped it by accident while trying to reach for something on the passenger seat and it shifted to neutral without me pressing the button to disengage drive. Is this normal? Scared the crap out of me I quickly moved it back to drive without pushing the button. Is this normal?

Thanks.

Neutral to Drive and back without depressing the button is normal. The button is there to prevent you from going into/out of park or reverse accidentally.

i do this at least 5 times a week.

i always forget to push it into manual mode (i drive in manual mode 99.9% of the time), and i'll think im in manuel mode (when im not) and continue to push the gear up into neutral....

doh!

I do this every now and then myself.

Go to make a right turn and get on it a bit... vroooooom yeah! Shift time... VROOOMMMM OMG Oh Noes! Auto Mode!
Shift back into drive and slowly pull away ducking down in my seat...

Cause you know everyone who sees/hears it thinks "Oh look at the stupid guy in his 'fast and furious car' thinking he's soooo cool, can't even shift right... douche"

you guys crack me up, good to hear that this is normal thought there was something wrong.

By doing this (shift in auto from D to N) will it cause any serious damage? I wonder if warranty covers this?

Thanks everyone!

No, it will be no difference than if you were having it in Park and revving a bit. Unless of course you're at WOT when you do it and don't let off as soon as you feel yourself lurch forward. Then you might pop something, but from accidental bumpage and recognizing it, there will be no problems.

To the car I mean, your pride might get a little bruised...
