They are talking about conventional (dino-based) oils in your quote. Later in the article, they say:

Ran 195* on the dash oil temp gauge on the highway this weekend with 25 row cooler installed. Previous to cooler I was at 255* same, 103* heat index/humid weather. I'm going to get a shot on the oil pan with an infrared thermometer to see what the sump reads next time out.

I've seen someone on here mention this before. I want to think they said basically add 10-15 degrees to what your gauge says for a guestimate on what it is at the other end? So these guys that are seemingly on the edge of the 180* rule w/ 170 showing on the guage should be in the 180-190 range?

Wondering if anyone’s ever moved/added a temp sensor as it leaves the engine or leaves turbo? Seems like a much better alternative
