Oil temp questions

Oil is "rated" at 212*.

In Texas during last summer I saw 230 during heavy traffic, but the moment I moved it dropped down to 215 fairly quickly.

I am about the change the oil in my car soon and then ... once I decide what to get.. will go the intake route as my first mod, which will likely be the drop-ins with the post maf tubes... perhaps that will help bring the temps down a bit more.

Only thing that will bring your oil temps is an oil cooler.

My oil temp hit 240F driving on the interstate at 70-80mph in 6th gear. Ambient temp was 100-104F. That has been the highest I've seen the oil temp to date. I'm at 2800 miles and have not changed the oil yet but will at 3k.

The area I live in doesn't allow me to drive 70-80 so I can't compare. I wouldn't drive that fast anyway... burns to much gas ... which has gone up this week for some reason after it came down quite a bit for a while.

Driving 70-80 doesn't really burn much gas IMO. I usaually get 21-24 miles on avg. at those speeds. As long as the road is flat.

It doesn't burn less lol. My last tank was 25.6 average with only 1500 miles on the car. I do realize that some places you pretty much have to drive 70-80 mph or you'll get run over.

Austin hit 104 today. On the drive home from work, I noticed a peak oil temp at 240. 1800 miles to date, no oil change yet. How much does an oil cooler reduce the temp?

When you add this, your good to go. Your basically addding a radiator for your oil along with the extra oil capacity.

Edit. I forgot to mention I still have my block off plate on. It's covering about 3 inches still. I really could remove it completly with these temps where having. Reason being is in the mornings it's still about 75 degrees and my oil temps only hit about 170

Do you have a thermostatic plate installed? I got the GTM 34 row installed with one a few days ago and now I'm having a hard time getting to 180 with normal driving even when it's fairly hot outside. I remember reading that some of the oil still has to run through the cooler with the plate installed but I'm just wondering if it's time I build a block off plate?

Yes I have it installed. It can be hard to hit 180. Even mine was 175 today at 89 degrees with my block off plate covering about 4 inches. But that's the beauty of it. That was not in traffic. That's a different story. Check out my block plate design in my sig below. Rep if you like.
