Update: I left it off for about 4 hours. Came back and no change from the OP, got aggravated, said F it and disconnected the negative terminal of the battery

Update: I left it off for about 4 hours. Came back and no change from the OP, got aggravated, said F it and disconnected the negative terminal of the battery and everything is working fine (knocking on some serious wood). Wish me luck.

if the ecu detects a misfire or a problem with the variable cam timing it will give you this lowered rev limiter and it is harsh as hell when this happened to me i could do the same disconnect the battery trick and it would be fine for a while then do it again next time it happens don't reset it and take it to the dealer to have them fix it. My timing set was junk
