For the curious -- My Oil Analysis @ 1000mi
I just had a Blackstone Labs oil analysis done on the original oil @ 1000mi. Anyone with oil analysis experience on past VQs feel free to chime in.
A little background here... I took delivery of it with 250mi on the odometer because the dealership had to make a trade with another to get this car. After that, I drove it 300+ miles to get this back from Fresno to LA. On the freeway back, I varied my rpms and drove it pass 4k rpms all day long. I would constantly be downshifting from 6th to 4th and revving it to 6.5rpm while letting it coast back down to 55mph in 4th... similarly 6th to 3rd, 5th to 3rd. You get the idea Based on the guy's analysis comments, there wasn't anything really to analyze - just that it was a new car, wear looked normal, and to check back at the next oil change. If anything, it goes to show that its probably good to change your oil earlier and go shorter intervals while the car is breaking in... and maybe even stay away from synthetic oil until wear levels reach a stable point? Even though there's an oil filter and all, there's a lot of metals in the oil from the new engine. I've been driving it pretty aggressively now and I'm curious to see the wear levels on the next analysis at 3750mi. Last edited by ZzzZz; 03-17-2009 at 02:30 AM. |

I had 4.5 miles on mine when I picked it up. I drove it for 600 miles with an occasional +4000 rpm. I varied the rpms while maintaining speed limits...etc. I checked the oil at 600 miles and saw some weird looking stuff on the white paper towel (more than just oil). Took it in for the first oil change at ~660 miles. Now at ~3k miles and the oil looks clean. Conclusion: The first "few" hundred are truly "break-in" miles.............. Glad I didn't push things too hard on the initial 1200 miles.

With all the ruckus about the oil temperatures, it would be beneficial if someone doing this to ask the labs what temperature the factory oil starts to breakdown.
