Need help on selection of motor oil

So, I'm so sick of these idiot nissan dealers around me that have monkeys working for them.

I go to get my oil change like usual at the dealership, well these idiots are standing over the car about to put regular oil instead of synthetic like I told them to put, so I just about had it with them.

Thanks to AK370Z for providing with wonderful and fantastic details, I decided to do it my self.

so before everyone start busting out all these exotic oils, I'm just looking for a good/not too pricey oil. Something I can get from autozone or hardware stores.

lets here it..........

p.s. im sure this has been discussed a lot but what can i say, im a noob

Corbitt 10-25-2010 12:55 PM

Without going into scientific details (this oil is better than that oil debate), and only focusing on price and availability, I recommend Mobil 1 synthetic ($24.00 at Walmart for 5 qt jug). I put Mobil 1 extended performance in mine and it's $28 at Walmart. It's hard to beat that price for the quality of M1

kenchan 10-25-2010 01:00 PM

crisco.

kyung88 10-25-2010 01:08 PM

thats what i was thinking

GZ3 10-25-2010 01:12 PM

i have had great success with good ol pennzoil platinum and pureone purelator OF, temps dropped about 10-15...engine is smooth and responsive

Can't go wrong with Mobil 1 synthetic. Many people have various favorites but no one ever seems to argue about Mobil 1.

ClemsonWill 10-25-2010 02:56 PM

I just put Mobile1 in my Z. I have used it on my past three cars and never had an issue. Walmart by far has the best price. Don't get taken at autozone. They give you a 4 qt bottle for 29.99 when Walmart gives you 5 qt for 24.00. Bottles look the same.

Ztoon 10-25-2010 03:05 PM

I switched to Ester when my dealer recommended it for twice the price. Now they say don't bother unless it's knocking. Wishy washy idiots! So now I'm back to Mobil 1 syn. or Pennzoil plat., whichever goes on sale at Walmart.

import111 10-25-2010 03:26 PM

Since they recommend ester oil in the 370Z and since I beat the hell out of my Z I use Royal Purple. Costs a lot of $ but I feel safer using it.

kyung88 10-25-2010 05:15 PM

Hmmm..... Beat the hell out of it, you say...... When you sell your Z, this could prove to be an expensive post for you.

:iagree: Same here, although on my last oil change a couple of weeks ago I switched to Pennzoil Ultra - same results.

DIGItonium 10-25-2010 07:23 PM

What I would like to know is with winter approaching are you guys still running synthetic? I haven't switched to synthetic on my Z yet.

ZCarMan 10-25-2010 07:33 PM

Have used the Nissan Ester since June 2009 when I purchased, but its rather pricey so probably not what you are looking for.

Dwight Frye 10-25-2010 08:17 PM

Redline 5W-30. $10 per qt. delivered to your door when ordered by the case from Amazon.com. A Mobil 1 110 filter or a Purolator Pure One. Change the oil yourself. You'll know it was done right. The VQ37 is a high strung, hot running sports car engine. Spend a few extra bucks and use the best.
The Pennzoil Platinum and Pennoil Ultra is also getting good reports with the VQ35 and VQ37 engines and it's a bit less expensive.

dthem370 10-25-2010 08:45 PM

redline 5w-30 and K&N filter here.

For those using Redline, have you experienced any decrease in oil temps?

drivin blind 10-26-2010 01:18 PM

Shell Rotella 5W-40 here. German Castrol for the STI. RP

Not me. Still running as hot as ever. Oil cooler in the spring.

Dwight Frye 10-26-2010 06:02 PM

My Z is just shy of 10K miles on the odometer. I have been running the Redline 5W-30 oil since the 5K mark. I have not seen a noticeable difference in the oil temps but it never exceeded about 235-240 in spirited driving even with less than 5K on the engine. I don't think a valid opinion could be drawn regarding the oil and temps until car had a lot more than 10K miles on it. Many report that as the engines break in, temps drop a little.

Endgame 10-26-2010 06:17 PM

thx guys....

tranceformer 10-26-2010 10:14 PM

Castrol Syntec 0w-30 "German Castrol" seems to run really well in my Z. I'm on my 3rd fill of it, the first two looked great in the UOA results.

370fan 10-27-2010 01:38 PM

x2 on the German Castrol. Really good stuff. I also highly recommend the NAPA Gold or Purolater Pure One filter. I go with the NAPA generally since my local store has filters 50% on every Friday.

AllForTheCash 10-27-2010 02:51 PM

I have used Amsoil with Mobil 1 Oil filters and AmsOil filters in my previous cars...will do the same with the 370z

chuckd05 10-27-2010 03:35 PM

I have had Ester and Royal Purple in mine..

I noticed no improvements in anything with RP so I went back to Ester.. with Puralotor Pro 1 filter..

RP is an ester based oil.

My dealer tells me that all 2010 370's come with the Ester oil and that dealers are instructed to strongly suggest synthetic only. I bought the 6 oil change maint plan (it saves me about $30 in 3 years). The plan docs say that it covers only the normal petroleum-based oil. I called the dealer and got the general manager. Even though the plan says it won't pay for the Ester oil except for the GT-R and the Altima Hybrid, the GM said that the plan also includes Ester oil for the Z. The dealer won't do an oil change with anything other than ester or another synthetic you bring in yourself on a 370.

I have been using Mobil 1 since it came out. I swear by it. There was an article somewhere that said Mobil looked at Ester oil and determined it was a high quality synthetic not unlike theirs.

Dwight Frye 10-27-2010 06:13 PM

My problem with the Nissan ester oil as a do it yourself oil changer was that it cost over $14 per quart at the dealer when I paid the stinkin' 8.75% tax. I get Redline 5W-30 for just under $10 per qt. delivered right to my front door when purchased by the case. No comparison, especially when exactly what the Ester oil is (and isn't) is still being debated.

blackflag 10-27-2010 09:51 PM

Valvoline Full Synthetic. Easily the best choice, in my opinion. Mobil 1 is overpriced and not any better.

BalanBro 10-27-2010 10:02 PM

Depending on where you live, Pep Boys sometimes offers 5 qt of Mobile 1 and a Mobile 1 Filter for 29.99. I'm still running Ester since it's still a conventional oil and typically better for brake-in ( I have only 4k miles), but I will be bouncing between Mobile 1 and Penzoil Platinum which have consistantly had great UOA results and can be had for a great price if you catch a sale. PureONE filters are also a great value, and have been shown to have a a pretty quality design to boot.

daisuke149 10-27-2010 10:14 PM

ive been using redline. I may go to mobil 1 for my next change. ;) would be free except for the filter.

370Zsteve 10-27-2010 10:24 PM

I picked up a gallon of Pennzoil Ultra at Wal Mart last month. Don't remember the price, but it was so much cheaper than buying by the Quart.

IDZRVIT 10-28-2010 02:38 PM

Mobil 1 at the first change and all changes thereafter with a K&N filter.

Is the Mobil 110 filter a larger/longer size that fits the Z? I was just asking cause I thought the correct filter was 108. I still can't believe how small our filters are. :icon14:

G Fo12ce 11-10-2010 03:57 PM

Just because no one mentioned it, I use Castrol Edge so far with K&N filter. Where are you guys getting the German Castrol?

My last car (E46 M3) had special oil: Castrol Motorsport 0-60. That was German oil I beleive and you had to get it from the dealer. There were some that would sell you them for about $9 a quart. I guess I just went with Castrol out of habit from the last car hoping some of the same magic from the M3 oil goes into Edge lol.

tranceformer 11-10-2010 04:30 PM

As far as I know, German Castrol is only available at certain Autozone stores.

ChrisSlicks 11-10-2010 04:47 PM

Have had good results with Castrol Edge and Pennzoil Platinum, both run at elevated temperatures for extended periods. Both bought on sale at Advanced Auto Parts in conjunction with either a K&N filter or the new PureOne filters.
