My problem with the Nissan ester oil as a do it yourself oil changer was that it cost over $14 per quart at the dealer when I paid the stinkin' 8.75% tax. I get Redline 5W-30 for just under $10 per qt. delivered right to my front door when purchased by the case. No comparison, especially when exactly what the Ester oil is (and isn't) is still being debated.

Depending on where you live, Pep Boys sometimes offers 5 qt of Mobile 1 and a Mobile 1 Filter for 29.99. I'm still running Ester since it's still a conventional oil and typically better for brake-in ( I have only 4k miles), but I will be bouncing between Mobile 1 and Penzoil Platinum which have consistantly had great UOA results and can be had for a great price if you catch a sale. PureONE filters are also a great value, and have been shown to have a a pretty quality design to boot.

I picked up a gallon of Pennzoil Ultra at Wal Mart last month. Don't remember the price, but it was so much cheaper than buying by the Quart.

Mobil 1 at the first change and all changes thereafter with a K&N filter.

Just because no one mentioned it, I use Castrol Edge so far with K&N filter. Where are you guys getting the German Castrol?
My last car (E46 M3) had special oil: Castrol Motorsport 0-60. That was German oil I beleive and you had to get it from the dealer. There were some that would sell you them for about $9 a quart. I guess I just went with Castrol out of habit from the last car hoping some of the same magic from the M3 oil goes into Edge lol.

As far as I know, German Castrol is only available at certain Autozone stores.

Have had good results with Castrol Edge and Pennzoil Platinum, both run at elevated temperatures for extended periods. Both bought on sale at Advanced Auto Parts in conjunction with either a K&N filter or the new PureOne filters.

The Mobil 1 #110 is just a longer version of the # 108 which is the same size as factory. If you check the various filter guides, you will see that there are generally 2 filters that fit the VQ35 engine family (and of course the new VQ37 engines) I figure the larger one has more media surface area to filter with but isn't so grossly over sized so as to cause any pressure issues. Nissan says either size are OK for those engines, I'd rather go larger.

While I'm still only sitting at 500 miles, when the time comes I'll be using Mobil 1 synthetic and the Mobil 1 filter.
I've used this combo on the Altima and Maxima I owned so I feel pretty comfortable with it. |
