Endless question about auto's

This is not meant to be a debate between the auto guys and the manual die hards.........

Is the 7at as good as advetised. I've heard the words world class used when reading about it. is it really that much better than the older 6at?

fxroar 10-13-2010 07:45 PM

Shifts are lightening fast compared to old 6at.

Cmike2780 10-13-2010 07:46 PM

It's better than most automatics, but I still prefer the manual. If a dual clutch set-up was available, I would have gone in that direction.

I thought this was about brakes! lol

What 6at, do you mean the old 5spd auto? I think that that 7spd is better in all out foot to floor accelleration, but when it comes to dowshifts and at lower speeds I found the old unit leaps better. I still to this day hate sometimes how jerky and confussed it gets at times then, but overall its good.

NXTAZEE 10-13-2010 08:24 PM

When driving aggressively in manual mode the up & down shifts are very crisp and fast. If you are in manual mode and are driving at low rpm's the down shifts are slow at times. But I guess it is matching the way you are driving. I've owned manuals all my life, and I don't regret purchasing the auto one bit.

I thought it was 5AT?

Vast improvement over the old Nissan automatics. The the 7AT in the Z with magnesium paddle shifters =

VCuomo 10-13-2010 08:42 PM

Yes, the 7AT is fantastic!

I would have to agree with the above statement. I believe the people who like autos will not like the 7AT as the changes are not as smooth. The 7AT seems to lock in very aggressively particularly when in manual mode. I also have had manuals all my life and don't regret my purchase one bit.

I have a 2010 G37 with the 7AT... I like it. It's a bit quirky at times, but you just have to learn how it reacts.

I get a chance once in awhile to drive my mom's 2010 M35 with the 5AT... it downshifts too easily compared to my G... at least for my tastes.

cc370z 10-13-2010 10:36 PM

I love my auto. I traded in my 350z auto and the 7speed is much much sportier! some of my friends give me heat untill they drive it and its alot of fun.

Waiz 10-14-2010 12:02 AM

Test drive one and decide for yourself.

c41006 10-17-2010 06:09 PM

I used to have a g35 with the 5AT and the 7AT is far better

CharleyGFX 10-18-2010 12:46 PM

I'm still waiting someone to hit 50k miles with a STILLEN supercharger in a 7AT. Then I will get one ;D Because all i really want right now is brembo brakes and STILLEN J-hooks!

diablokev87 10-18-2010 01:35 PM

Charley

Following anyone with a super charger/turbo and 7at? I am dieing to know how the 7AT holds up to 450+ rwhp.

Edit: Meant FI in general. :)

Word.. Meant FI in general. Thanks.

Jordo! 10-18-2010 02:14 PM

Unless you will be unhappy without a clutch pedal, you will love it -- it is really, really good!

Also: As fast or slightly faster in road tests than the 6MT; puts down the same power on the dyno due to full lock-up in 2-7th gear.

I emailed one of the guys @ STILLEN and they said it was holing up fine. BUT i wanna hear this from somone that bought one and drove it for a bit. Not the seller. (Sorry STILLEN guys)

And I must know, what else do we need to have done before slapping on that supercharger.

ninous26 10-19-2010 12:07 AM

The AT tranny was underrated in the 350z world too.. Lots of false assumptions..

This is what i'm worried about. I promised myself a MT this time but I really know how to work the manual mode and I know the 370z will have one worlds better than the 5AT..

6MT or 7AT? Damn.

sonic370 10-19-2010 08:30 AM

Humans where made to drive only AT.

common sense we only have two feet we only need two pedals.....:eekdance:

Heheh, next time im going to try to use both of my feet, one for brake and one for gas... wonder how that will turn out.

Mr&Mrs 10-26-2010 01:28 AM

Just dont hit the brake like it is a clutch when I first got mine, you might leave a tooth in the steering wheel lol. I also have only owned MT until this 7AT, I love it. I think someone else mentioned above though it does act a little retarded at low speeds when barely pressing the gas.

IS2000 10-29-2010 10:49 AM

I like mine a lot. It's not as smooth and quiet as some modern ATs (like the one I had in my 335i) at low speed, but when driving aggressively it shifts/ downshifts very fast. The left/ right paddles for downshift and upshift are also great.

TongMan 10-30-2010 02:11 AM

It's funny how people buy automatics that mimics a manual transmission.

I've never had to step on all three pedals at once so I'm on the fence about this. :)

ZeeYouLater 10-31-2010 08:45 AM

The auto was my choise because of the the never ending gear grinding discussions for the MT inside the 350z..370z forum
The problem of the auto in M Mode are the 7 gears ..there a two overdrives 7,6 and to down shift in M mode to the right gears it take to long if you are in 7th. on the german autobahn the 5th gear is good for 250Km/h (look inside the service maunel) but the fuel consumtion ist idotic versus the fun factor .. the 370z is not a snowplow in a state under the rule of law :-(
Best useable mode is auto with wheel shifters ..cause the auto mode is non sequential..cause it is not a sequential gearbox..its a very good optimised flawless oldscool auto ...bravo Jatco well done :-)

{SALVA} 11-05-2010 06:50 AM

does anyone else get a "thump" when in manual mode slowing down from say 3rd to 2nd or 2nd to 1st. Doesn't happen all the time but just worries me.

EXACTLY!!!! i haven't hit that yet; the only person i know with the SC that has hit that is RCZ. But i'm changing a couple things to hopefully get me there.

I want a Z 11-05-2010 08:06 AM

One of the best thing about the Z's paddles that I never hear mentioned is that the paddles are actually on the steering column, not the wheel. If you don't realize the benefit, drive a car where they turn with the wheel and try and shift while turning.

:iagree: You always know where to find them

rebe945 11-05-2010 09:14 AM

auto faster

As i posted this in another thread, Car and Driver in April 2009 had the auto run a 4.6 60 and a 13.1 quarter mile. This was .02 and .03 faster respectively than the best stick time. You still get the comments from some that is only an auto, but to each his own. Great car either choice.
