It sounds basically like a metallic cement mixer. The 6spd in very noisy in 1st & 2nd gear...just one of the quirks of this car and has been covered extensively if you do a search. The noise is basically non-existant in the higher gears. If its more of a "hard gear grinding/crunching" thats something more serious. Test the brakes, apply and see if you notice a change in the sound.
