Video: my clutch got stuck and won't come up again...
This first happened to me about 2-3 weeks ago whileI was on the freeway, but it was able to come back up after I pumped it a couple times. But yesterday, as I was leaving work for lunch, ~3 minutes of after my car started, as I was pulling out of the parking lot, my clutch started not coming back up. I took it to the dealership a few weeks ago, but I couldn't replicate the problem. Good think the Nissan dealership is right next to my work, so left my car in first gear and crossed the median and pulled up to the service drive of the Nissan dealership. I was able to pull it out of gear to stop, but that was it. The clutch wouldn't come back up again, which is a good thing, since now I can show them the problem. There was no way of getting the car back into gear had I gotten it out of gear.
The tech at first said it was the master cylinder. Then my buddy called me back and said it was the slave cylinder that's leaking so they would have to replace it. And the new slave (I'm not sure if he meant as in the 370's slave or if he mean there's a newer slave cylinder for the 370) has to be removed and installed some yada-yada way, so they would need it til Monday cuz they have to remove the transmission. They authorized a rental for me until then. I recorded it just got the heck of it. Nothing to it. The clutch goes down and doesn't come back up....

Nissan has know about this problem for a while now. It's not a problem specfic to the 370. Why they don't address it, I don't know. I guess 50 or so guys out of the thousands of cars they sell dosen't warrent action. It also dosen't really fall on guys that drive the Crap out of their cars. Guys who don't beat on them can get this also. This happened to me back in 04 and they knew about it back then also. Good luck with this and make them change everything out!!!! This has to be a alignment problem (I think) thats why so develop it and others don't, regardless of driving style.

Hydraulic leak - factory defect, most likely. It's the replacement slave cylinder they're talking about, mounted on your transmission.
Most likely within Nissan's expected failure rate, which any car manufacturer will have. They'll replace it under warranty, dealership will document it (when they write a repair order), and I'm sure it'll be folded into some corporate powerpoint presentation somewhere in Nissan. If it's not statisically significant, that's probably as far as it'll go. Hope you get it fixed quickly!

I might like to sticky my thread so all of our CSC problems are reported here:

The CSC is internal to the tranmission which is why it is such a pain to service. The whole transmission needs to be dropped and clutch removed in order to service it. Considering how difficult it is to service Nissan could have designed a stronger part, instead we get some crap made mostly of plastic.

Definitely the slave. They replaced the master the first time because it was easier.

Well well, looky here. Same thing was happening on my 2005 Maxima SE 6 speed.
Looks like they STILL haven't done anything about this. It almost NEVER happened in cool/cold weather. Only the summer months after the card idled (waiting at a drive through for example). It started to happen AFTER I put on an under-drive pulley but I believe this to be a coincidence. The theory we had going on in the Maxima forum at the time was boiling clutch fluid as guys who converted to silicone high temp clutch fluid never again had the issue. One thing that I did to get the clutch pedal back was to pump it, then drive at a fairly high speed on the highway. Last edited by darrinps; 09-27-2010 at 11:17 PM. |

my Z has about 18.6k miles....the first time I experienced this was when I had been driving in stop and go traffic for a good 25-30 minutes on the freeway...it was a very hot day...I felt my clutch not coming up, and I was able to step on it a few times (somewhat pumping it), and it came back up...the second time, I had just started the car for no more than 3 minutes on a cloudy day (my car had been sitting for a good 6 hours), not too hot of a day, probably mid 80's, drove it out of my work's parking lot, and it got stuck and wouldn't come up again...luckily, I work right next door to a Nissan dealership and I was able to roll in first gear into the dealership and had them look at it....
At first, I thought it was the hot weather...but it's not the weather nor the hot car...my car was still cool when it happened...first time was hot, second time was cool...and the second time, I tried pumping it up and jamming the clutch, but no dice...

Pretty much the same exact issue I had. The tech noticed the reservoir was empty, filled it up, pressed the clutch pedal, and saw fluid leaking out of the transmission.

Thanks for the video and info everyone...the same exact thing just happened to my z...I kept stalling out but I made it home...but now it won't go into gear even with the clutch pedal depressed. When I was stalling my way home I would get into gear and have to pull the clutch back up each time I changed gears...then when I was pulling into my driveway it decided to stay in 2nd gear. Now to visit my friend at the dealership or take it to a local shop....
