Default Crush Sleeve Replacement

Has anyone ever tried to replace the crush sleeve with shims? Need to know if this is even possible, I got a very good gears mechanic that is going to try and replace my crush sleeve with shims setup, was just wondering if anyone else has tried this?

I went from stock 3.69 gears to 4.08, then changed it back to stock because I'm installing a Stillen SC kit. The crush sleeve, after install on both setups got loose, created some gear whine and the preload of pinion gear had to be adjusted. It seems that the crush sleeve keeps giving way and loosens and creates gear whine.

The mechanic thinks that they can try and replace the crush sleeve with just shims make it more reliable than than the sleeve
