Default 1st Gear when turning your car off?

Okay... So the other I took my car in because I had some minor audio problems with the car...
Thankfully there was no problems to start off with...

So i get into my car... I press the clutch and start the car... And usually I start the car and put my iphone in to setup the music... But right when I start the car and let of the clutch... The car made the biggest jerk ever and just shut down... I WAS LIKE WTF JUST HAPPENED?!??!?!?!?!?!?! and i looked and it was in first gear. The technician(to me an assbag, lol excuse my language ^_^; left it in first...

Now I have seen lot of people doing this...
Is there any benefits to this?

Also when you leave it in first... do u put ur gear in first and turn ur car off? or turn your car off and put it in first?

Doesn't matter which you do. You can put it in gear, keep your foot on the clutch and turn the car off. or turn the car off, then clutch and put it in gear.

There is a benefit to parking in gear. If you are parked on an incline, front of the car uphill, it would be beneficial to put the car in first to prevent rolling backwards. If you are parked on a decline, front of the car downhill, it would be beneficial to put the car in reverse when you park to prevent from rolling forwards. As far as the technicians fault, it really isn't. I, for one, 90% dont park in gear, because i don't usually park on an incline. i put it in gear if its a moderately steep incline. get in the habbit of making sure your car is not in gear before letting out the clutch which you start your car. Just like you would at a traffic light. you dont need to stare at the guage cluster very long to see the 1 or the R, and all you really have to do is wiggle the stick to see if its in Neutral. don't worry about it though. you just stalled your car, thats all.... but its your fault.

Just don't do this if you have a turbo with a turbo timer.

it doesn't really hurt to do it. Just remember to do it in the right direction. you want to put the car in the gear that is OPPOSITE of how the car would roll if its parked on any type of incline. If forwards is UPhill, put it in first, if forwards is DOWNhill, put it in reverse.

It really just makes it more difficult for your car to move when parked. If you park on a totally flat surface, you theoretically dont even need to use the parking brake, but if someone comes along and pushes your car its gonna roll. i only use it if i'm parked on an incline or decline. Flat, its really not going to help or hurt you.

as long as you take it out of gear before you let out the clutch after you turn it on. Another safe thing to do is take it out of gear before you start the car.

I always park my car in second gear just because it is convenient for me the way it is positioned. There is no cons to put a car in gear while parked only pros.

In the UK we didn't even have that safety feature of having to put the clutch in first before the car would start, living here is the first time I have ever experienced that feature.
I always leave my car in gear so I always put it in neutral before I start it, force of habbit now since an older car I had didn't have a very good handbrake (e brake) so it couldn't be trusted to keep the car from rolling.

If you park in gear, just be sure to always put the car into neutral when starting it, and when turning it off don't just put it in gear, turn the car off, and then let the clutch out. You need to let the engine spin down before letting the clutch out, otherwise you'll lurch forward.

if the car was in neutral and car was to fall foward... reverse gear....

Always put it in gear, regardless of steepness or even presence of an incline. First gear if you roll backwards in neutral.
Reverse if you roll forwards in neutral.

And last but not least don't forget to set your handbrake/e-brake/parking brake. Always be cautious and pay attention when you're driving. You shouldn't be doing 50 things while your car is idling, just drive!

I thought leaving it in gear would put stress on the transmission. I usually leave it in neutral and use the parking brake. Not too many hills in my area, so rolling isn't really a concern.

In a technical point of view there is no reason that putting a car in gear while parked would put stress on the car.
