Now as an Engineer if I was to design tat gauge I would have the measurement be in the middle. That way when the car is running that needle is in the center, and at a quick glance you can now see if your running hot, or cool, without really having to look.
That's how I ran my Autometers in my Mustangs. All of the needles were straight up for a quick reference. Also, analog gauges read the most accurate towards the middle of the range, rather than at the extremes. I'm sure the engineers designing the gauges took this into consideration.
