Thats an awesome story but at the same time its sad that working a clutch and driving a 6 spd is a dying thing. Now if you want to buy a Porsche with a standard transmission you need to pay a premium, not the other way around!

yes, because a MT will probably last much long than those complicate-DCT, thus while the manufacture(s) cannot squeeze your pocket for future repairing/replacement on a MT, they just ask you to pay more up front to offset their lost. |

It all boils down to people becoming more and more lazy, mostly so with the lazy fat slobs here in the US. That's why you can typically buy just about any vehicle overseas with a manual, but nearly everything over here in the states is an auto. Hell, even semi-trucks are automatics these days. Embarrassing...

IMO does anyone miss the old mechanical typewriters? Automatics and Automated manuals are becoming or already are better then traditional manuals in every way. I would have no issues with my next new car not being a manual.

but no matter how good the AT is, it cannot prevent your car from being hijacked like a MT and that's the original point of this thread, I believe. |

With a manual, you can anticipate a corner and select the gear to use, rev the engine and engage at perfect point to get maximum acceleration out of the corner. With an automatic you have to press down the gas and wait for the computer to figure out what you want from it. That loses you seconds.

I'd venture to guess that automatic transmissions will outperform 90% of most drivers on a manual transmission. Even when you look at the track lap times, top drivers on a manual transmission can only outperform automatic transmission by a very small percentage. |

Today's automatics do outperform the manuals but they'll never give you the driving experience and zen that a manual provides.
It used to be that manuals were quicker. That changed sometime in the late 90s when auto technology made for crisper shifts, and there were more gears to bridge the huge gap of the old timey 2 and 3 speed automatics. It's still a slushbox though. |
