Who makes our Transmission

What up guys, I was wondering who makes the MT transmission for the 370. Is it in house by Nissan or an out side company????? Thanks guys.

tbonesteak 05-16-2010 06:58 PM

Nissan yo.

red6spd 05-16-2010 07:20 PM

K true that. Thanks

cossie1600 05-16-2010 08:20 PM

They should be shot, the thing is so clunky

I 2nd that it is damn clunky. Coming from driving a Mustang and an s2000 often, the Nissan gearbox is the worst I've seen. It scares the hell out of me sometimes, I do a double take on if it was a clunk or a grind, thankfully it's just a clunk. I'm going to try to change the tranny fluid in the near future and see if that helps.

m4a1mustang 05-17-2010 09:48 AM

This transmission is OK but it's not the best direct input transmission out there. The Tremecs in the late model Mustangs are freaking nice... wish ours were more like that.

Tremecs are the best out there.

The clunky transmission has always been a complaint. My Altima had a really noisy clunky tranny. But it was a great tranny. Very precise. So big deal its a little noisy.

Push the clutch in ALL the way and 2nd engages like a rocket... just have to learn to drive with different gearboxes...

gumpy 05-18-2010 05:50 PM

Yeah it's not the rifle bolt slick is it? It feels like it won't break but...

jeffreyfranz 05-19-2010 03:35 AM

Well...

Uh...
RX-8
Cayman
Boxster
MX-5 Miata
Honda S2000

Don't get me wrong, I love the Z. But we do need to be objective about these things. I have driven all of these except the Honda (taking word of mouth on that one), and they all have smoother shifters with equal or better precision to our clunky one. Just telling it the way I feel it. :driving:

import111 05-19-2010 01:32 PM

WRX, STi, and Scion TC also smoother than the 370Z for me. This is the clunkiest most grinding trans (I have the 5th gear grind) I have ever driven.

You grind 5th??? What like everytime????

cossie1600 05-19-2010 03:18 PM

RX-8, Corvette, Miata, 350z all had less clunky transmission. I guess the only one that came as bad as the 370 is maybe the GT3. I have 1200 miles on my car, the thing feels worse and worse every time. I know Nissan wont do anything when I take it back, but I still want them to document the problem before I replace the fluid. Hopefully it will be better once I swap new fluids in

If I don't shift very slowly from 6th to 5th, it grinds. Every other shift is fine. I see you posted in the "5th gear grind" thread.

Daishi 05-19-2010 04:57 PM

I have about 10k miles on my car. no grinding.. knock on wood.

red6spd 05-19-2010 04:57 PM

Thats weird. Yea I posted on there wondering if anyone with 2010's were having the tranny problems.

allenhhp 05-20-2010 06:32 AM

I do not like our tranny either.
both my friends' GTI and WRX have better tranny than mine.

allenhhp 05-20-2010 06:35 AM

I grind on 2nd gear. My previous 240sx had the some problem for me.
anyone grind 2nd?

Ain't it funny, somebody complaining about "THE 5th gear grind" as if it's normal? Couldn't be abuse. Naaaaaah.

gumpy 05-20-2010 07:29 AM

I use to grind the 3rd gear but it now doesn't so it's either broken in or broken... hmm...

I have a hard time seeing a 5th or 6th gear grind coming from abuse. Unless I am an oddity or smoking crack most of the abuse happens in the lower gears, 1,2,3..sometimes 4...

cossie1600 05-20-2010 12:17 PM

Every gear is clunky, especially 2nd

That's the one I dislike...

6SPD_FTW 05-20-2010 09:39 PM

Correct me if I'm wrong, but on the 370Z:

Triple cone synchronizers on 1st and 2nd
Double cone synchros on 3rd and 4th
Single synchro on 5th and 6th, hence they're way more likely to bite the dust than others.

6th, and later 5th grinded on my Z. Tranny replaced with a new (and IMMENSELY quieter) tranny.

Part of the grinding problem is associated with me shifting from 2nd gear directly to 5th or 6th gear on occasion (which I have done in EVERY other vehicle I've owned and never had problems). Either way...this one seems much better, quieter and best of all, no grinding.

Clunky??

Like the shifting FEEL or the clunking NOISE?? If it's the noise you're talking about, that is the differential mounts (which are made of rubber) which have too much slack. Polyurethane pumpkin mounts will help tremendously.

And just for the record, how in the hell can you compare a tC (FWD CABLE-CONTROLLED shifter) to the 370Z (RWD DIRECT shifter shaft with no cables involved). The feel is ENTIRELY different. At least on a Honda FWD, they still use a solid shaft to control the shifter (which helps tremendously with the feel as opposed to cables.)

Late,
Trav

cossie1600 05-20-2010 10:44 PM

You can have all the syncros you want, but it doesn't make it more smooth. Every time I put it in gear, I get this I am going to grind feel everytime. '

RX-8 are not cable controlled shifter, neither is the Miata. They are 100x better than the Nissan gearbox, even my 350 was better.

tbonesteak 05-21-2010 12:15 AM

Coming from an s2k here as well and the tranny is sub par compared to the S. S2k honestly has one of the best transmissions ever made. Thing is buttah and very connected.

IDZRVIT 05-21-2010 09:42 AM

The Z shifts wayyy smoother than my Harley!:wtf2:

vipor 05-21-2010 12:01 PM

Pretaining to the whole 2nd to 5th shift I've noticed that SRM makes it weird, so you have to hold the clutch in a little longer than normal for the revs to get where they need to be otherwise you'll get a nice lurch.

Let me know how that comes out, I would also consider it. The Amsoil full Synth. is considered some of the best in the business.
