which synthetic oil do you prefer??
wsup fellow Z ridaz~.. don't know whether or not this is the right area for this question, but here goes anyways..
i hit 1300 miles on my car and am now going to go full synthetic.. Which synthetic oil do you use? And which filter do you use? I know alot of the forum guys here use redline with a K&N oil filter.. Also, someone on here stated that PURONE makes the best filters.. i don't know. I'm a K&N fan, so maybe I'll go K&N My close friend advised the following though: "Just use a genuine NISSAN oil filter and Mobil 1 synthetic oil" I went to Wal-Mart and bought a 5qt 0w-30 fully synthetic engine oil for ~$25 and all i need now is an oil filter.. just wanted to get some input before i make the change.. ** Just fyi, i drained the factory oil at 600 miles already.. ** probably will keep changing my oil every 4,000 miles.. thanks in advanced :icon17: |
You should have put it in the engine area of the forum.
My first change will be at about 4k miles with RP as i've decided to use ester based oils in the car. |
RP for me, basically because i cant find anything else locally and its never done me wrong. K&N filter because its the best autozone sells i guess.

Congrats and Welcome!
I see we're practically neighbors. lol :hello: And like it has been suggested, edit your intro post to only introduce yourself, and ask the oil question on the engine section. |
K&N is fine. I currently have pure1 on my Z but I have two K&N sitting at my desk. So I'll use those K&N for next two changes and switch to Purolator Pure1 for all future changes
As for oil, any API certified 5W30 will work. Though, it's suggested that you wait a little (3000-5000 miles) before switching to synthetic THOUGH there are members here that switched at as early as thousand miles and no issues till date. Welcome :hello: |

Here is a better view of the filter AK posted & recommended, you can see the product number a little better. |

From what I understand the Puro has a finer filter but this comes at the expense of flow rate (though still within SEA standards). Now the bypass pressure on the Puro is also somewhat higher then the K&N. So allthough it filters better just from a filter performance point of view and therefore does good in tests, I'm wondering how good it is for our engines, especially when you drive them under high load for a longer time. I wasn't able to find the exact specs for the two different filters and I don't know if this is correct, but this is what I found for similar filters: Purolator PureOne PL34631 * Average largest pore size: 42 µm * Smallest pore size: 10 µm * 30W 70F Oil flow @ 10psi: 5.3 oz per minute K&N 3002 * Average largest pore size: 63 µm * Smallest pore size: 27 µm * 30W 70F Oil flow @ 10psi: 14.7 oz per minute |
Keep in mind this is a new members thread section... lol

But I'm still on topic... |
Hey all, thanks for all the replies and input..
I'll try to be more careful in where to post and what to put in the header section of posts. appreciate all the feedbacks.. last question.. anyone use 0W-30?? as for the oil filter, imma probably just roll with da crew and get k&n |
I do. But it's German Castrol.
|
Ester oil is all I have used since buying my car. 21k miles now. However, it does cost an arm and a leg for an oil change.
|
I just changed my oil and put in Amsoil and used a K&N filter.
|
Pepboys had a sale. 5 qts of Mobil 1 fully synthetic and a Mobil 1 oil filter for $30!!
They had it on sale so i went and cleaned out my local pepboys and bought 15 quarts of Mobil 1 fully synthetic 0w-30 and got 3 filters for about $100.. I asked around some speed shops and close car enthusiast friends told me Mobil 1 was awesome. As for Ester oils, they mentioned that ester oils just lasts longer. "If you don't plan on changing your oil very often, then get ester, but if you do it more frequent, you won't need it.." Ester is so expensive at the same time.. so, no ester for me.. Mobil 1 all the way~ :icon17: |
by the way, amazon has a case of redline 5w30 for $110.90 shipped and after taxes (lowest price i've seen so far)... just fyi... dont know how long price will last..
|
Oh oh, do I see another oil thread?
btw, I like Amsoil. |

I noticed the local Walmart has a rollback price on 5qt jug of Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30 for $20 (regular price $23). I think I might pick up a a jug or two. |

I used Pennzoil Platinum and Ultra with PureOne filters on my last car (2004 Maxima) and never had any problems... I have a 2010 G37xS sedan now... same engine as the 370, of course... I'll give Pennzoil Ultra a go when it's time for my 2nd oil change. Still have 2,000+ miles to go until my 1st. I'll have the dealer use their stuff, then switch over.

I'm currently running Red Line oil with PureOne oil filter.
|
Amsoil.
Still not sure if I will go with the Signature Series 0W-30 or the normal full synthetic 5W-30 this time around. Wix is my filter of choice, but I could also use a Purolator Pure1. |
G.C. 0W-30. Worked well in both the WRX and STI. Use Super Tech filters. Always changed at 3000 mi.
|
Some auto manufacturers deliver their new vehicles with synth' oil. Weird.
|
Valvoline synthetic, Pure One filter. :happydance:
|
Lol. Those oil threads!
Did anyone ever heard a drama story with someone using synthetic oil in the past (not refering to low oil issues due to engine comsuption, bad seals, too long oil change intervals or cheap filters!!!). I'm using using Royal Purple right now, but use Mobil1, RedLine, Castrol Syntec, Amsoil etc... And NEVER had any kind of issues... |
I use mobile 1 full sunthetic. You can't go wrong with a NASCAR sponsor. http://www.royalpurple.com/corvette-enthusiast.html

You got any info which shows it's not? Happy to learn more... The article posted on the RP site suggests that it doesn't but does it indirectly... but all the other wisdom on the internet (and yes i know the net isn't the best for info) suggests it has plenty of esters in it... I've just shot an email to RP themselves for an answer... Will let you know of their response... |
Redline for me.

Well I got responses from both Aus and US technical officers at RP... it's a group IV oil not a group V... lame... I have a bottle to use... ><
|
ester is just another sales gimmick, semi synthetic like any other, if you are going abuse the car use royal purple 10W40 in the summer and 5W30 in the winter. Summit racing has it at a great price. Ester doesn't handle heat very well so if you track it I would switch.
|
oh and get the XPR series.
|
imo mobil1 is one of the best. it's been around a long time.i have used it in a corvette and now my Z with no problems.

well documented in the G37 world, the engine can tick due to the film breaking on the VVEL mechanism... The ester sticks to the hydrogenless diamond like coating we have on the moving parts of the engine stopping the ticking... It's why the Nissan Ester oil was created... I don't abuse my car... we'll see how it goes with the RP... I may consider moving to Motul or Redline in the future... |
