5W-30, 0W-30, 5W-20...

At my first oil change at the Nissan/BMW dealer, the Nissan service chief absolutely insisted that the Zs do not come to them with esther oil in 'em, just plain old Shell 5W-30.

Now, I have a case of RP 5W-20 left from my RX-8 days. But when I asked if it was OK to use 5W-20 synthetic in my Z, the other service chief (BMW this time) practically jumped out of his chair to say "no, don't do it, you need the 5-30 in that car."

I know some of the older hands here are sick of oil-talk, but there are many of us who are relatively new to the car.

I changed my oil to 0w-30 Mobil 1 fully synthetic.. They say the only difference between 0w and 5w is the weight and that the 0w gives better gas mileage.. It's lighter so your pistons move up and down with less restriction...

I got Mobil 1 0w-30 and the Mobil 1 filter and OMG!!! I felt the difference from the start.. changing gears and accelerating feels soo much better!!!!!!

wow.. the power of synthetic oil.. soothes the soul..

Some auto manufacturers deliver their new vehicles with synth' oil. Weird.

Lol. Those oil threads!
Did anyone ever heard a drama story with someone using synthetic oil in the past (not refering to low oil issues due to engine comsuption, bad seals, too long oil change intervals or cheap filters!!!).
I'm using using Royal Purple right now, but use Mobil1, RedLine, Castrol Syntec, Amsoil etc... And NEVER had any kind of issues...

ester is just another sales gimmick, semi synthetic like any other, if you are going abuse the car use royal purple 10W40 in the summer and 5W30 in the winter. Summit racing has it at a great price. Ester doesn't handle heat very well so if you track it I would switch.

Nah there's a reason why we want ester for our cars...

well documented in the G37 world, the engine can tick due to the film breaking on the VVEL mechanism... The ester sticks to the hydrogenless diamond like coating we have on the moving parts of the engine stopping the ticking... It's why the Nissan Ester oil was created...

I don't abuse my car... we'll see how it goes with the RP... I may consider moving to Motul or Redline in the future...

Sorry I took so long to respond gumpy but looks like you got your answer from rp themselves. And as fAr as the ticking I have redline and the car still ticks it's just the way the motor sounds. Any good quality oil will be fine redline.. Amsoil.. Mobil 1. I'm using redline right now. May try something else though
