Is resetting the ECU after mods unneccesary?

I'm wondering how much reality there is in the idea that the ECU must be reset in order for it to "learn" to adapt to new mods. The reason I'm asking is that after I had my intake and exhaust installed, I experienced some pretty respectable gains immediately...without resetting the ECU.

For example, if I were to take my car to a much different altitude, I would imagine that the ECU would adjust "on the fly" so to speak...much like it would adjust to new mods changing the A/F ratio.

What are your thoughts? Is the need to reset the ECU a myth?

You don't really have to... people reset so the ECU relearns faster AFAIK.

Exactly. You don't "Have" to as the ECU will re-learn over anywhere from 20-50 miles. By disconnecting, you dump the Long term fuel trims and start again at "0"

This shot shows Long term trims at a -3% (rich) correction. Typical 370 settings will show a Rich correction from there to -10%. Ideally you want to be at Zero, but that's hard to achieve without tuning, custom MAF tubes etc..

Sounds like resetting the ECU would be most necessary before tuning then? Not necessarily bolt-ons.

Well, tuning would probably reset that field anyways you would think..

GT-R technician that worked on my 370 for the intakes told em that resetting WILL make it learn quicker but it is so little that it is pointless to go through the hassle of redoing all your settings
