Pretty soon, I've got 1600 miles so far in the first 3 weeks
I want to switch to a Synthetic around 2000 or so.

Try too go to 3500, preferably 5000.

More people prefer RP, over Mobil! I need and look into Motul, I don't have enough feed back on that brand.

Motul smells sooo nice you could drink it - and the engine always seems to love it (I'm sure that's just my imagination) - but I tend to go for the cheapest, because I'm an old skinflint

Only ones I have used are Mobil 1 since they are available everywhere here. I don't change oil brands. Whichever I use, I'll stick to it.

I think he has a good point. 350Z VQ wasn't too fond of Synthetic, right? I think it's better to wait a little longer like 5000 - 7000 maybe? Just a thought. I sure it'll be fine even if you decide not to wait.

I think you have a point here. I took an Engines and Powertrains class in college and one thing I learned is that you should stick with the same oil over the lifetime of the automobile. I dont know how true it is but I figure if it helps, even in the slightest, Ill follow the tip. The reason to keep the same oil is because each oil has different detergents and switching them can somehow cause a problem.

Also, when I had my SRT-4, I changed the oil every 3,000 miles on the dime because it was turbocharged and the turbo was oil-cooled. But with an N/A car I think 5000-6000 should definitely be more than sufficient. I actually read online that synthetic oil breaks down a certain amount after 6,000 miles and thats when it performs the best.

My understanding is, that deposits build up in your engine. Some of those deposits act as a "gasket" on aging vehicles. In spots where original seals may have sprung a leak carbon or coke may build up and actually prevent the leak from being apparent. If you change oils the different properties (detergents, weights, viscosities) may loosen some of those deposits and cause a leak to begin. In a new engine this is obviously less of a concern. I've even heard that you should flush your engine with kerosene before changing oils to clean out any deposits.

I used Castrol GTX in my Speed6; it performed flawlessly. I'm planning on using Castrol Edge in my Z. I still think that 90% of all general knowledge about engine oil (including my own) is myth (flame away).
