My oil temps averaged around 190 while driving in the mountains. Temp was around 65 degrees. It hit 220 once when i was sitting in a parking lot idling.

CBRich 04-04-2010 07:27 AM

Hovering slightly above 200 won't hurt anything. And like others have said I just don't want to have to worry about the problems caused by an oil cooler.

370Zsteve 04-04-2010 07:34 AM

Anything over 240 is bad. Anything under 240 is normal. This applies to any engine, not just the VQ37.

I doubt anyone will go near 240 unless they are on a racetrack.

I totally agree.... If this was a major issue, they would of fixed it for the 2010's.. Until my car engine locks up or falls apart due to high temp, I'm not worried about it... :shakes head:

:werd: in fact, if the Z didn't come equipped with an oil temp gauge, it would be a non-issue.

Yeah people like to make a big deal over nothing.

temps never came higher than the normal temperature here.

even with some high acceleration and high revving

PapoZalsa 04-04-2010 09:22 AM

I open a Topic in the Nissan North America in Facebook for those that might have or having a problem/issue/concern with the Oil Temp to post there.

That way the issue/concern will get notice by the upper food chain in Nissan.

And it also said this:

A key new test for GF-4, which is also required for API SM, is the Sequence IIIG, which involves running a 3.8 L (232 in³), GM 3.8 L V-6 at 125 hp (93 kW), 3,600 rpm, and 150 °C (300 °F) oil temperature for 100 hours. These are much more severe conditions than any API-specified oil was designed for: cars which typically push their oil temperature consistently above 100 °C (212 °F) are most turbocharged engines, along with most engines of European or Japanese origin, particularly small capacity, high power output.
The IIIG test is about 50% more difficult[10] than the previous IIIF test, used in GF-3 and API SL oils. Engine oils bearing the API starburst symbol since 2005 are ILSAC GF-4 compliant.[11]
The journal bearings are removed from the test engine and scrutinized for any wear. If the wear appears excessive, the oil doesn't get SM certification. Seems like there is a helluva lot of SM certified oils on the shelves of auto parts stores so they must be passing the test for GF-4.

There will always be non-believers and skeptics. I'm happy with my SM oil knowing the above.

Higher ambients don't necessarily result in higher oil temps.. 220-230 are perfectly normal oil temps BTW.. Don't like it? quit whining and install a cooler for <$300. Nissan isn't gonna do it for you.

EXACTLY!!!!

The last few vehicles I'ved owned all had the same temps...not understanding all this fuss.

do u track your car? how is it without the cooler? i would like to begin tracking this summer but im conflicted between the risk of oil cooler leaks and the possibility of destroying the engine as a result or on the other hand the car overheating and shutting down after 5 min on the track.

I agree with that! If you want to track this car then, yes, an oil cooler is recommended. But daily usage I would think we are ok! (Of course the failing oil coolers are scary also)

I generally don't see this car as a track car. To me it's more of a touring/ sport coupe for the road. It takes so much to make this car competitive for the track in my opinion. (Just my 2 cents of course) I've gotten to drive quite a few cars on the track so I'm basing it off that history. :driving:

Even though the thermostat is a 180deg t-stat, the VQ (along with nearly any other engine with a 180deg t-stat) runs a normal coolant temp of 195-210.

Oil temps are going to mirror that...it's normal.

The only thing that really pisses me off about the Z is that Nissan installed factory donut oil coolers on the 3.5L VQ35DE, but not on the high performance VQ37VHR. My 2007 Altima 3.5SE 6MT NEVER NEVER saw oil temps in excess of 240deg...no matter how hard I drove it. Even though the car didn't have an oil temp gauge, it did have a factory oil temp sensor and I monitored that frequently with my Autoenginuity OBD-II scanner.

Just doesn't make sense to me.

Late,
Trav

Care to eloborate on which cars you are referring to? I am really curious...
