Tilton Clutch
Admins - not sure if this should be in another section, please re-route if so
Does anyone remember when Tilton clutches were made for the 350Z. I believe the whole setup - flywheel, clutch, etc, etc, was like 15lbs and rev'd like a Ferrari. Performance Nissan in CA was the only place to get them. I am pretty sure Tilton stopped making them b/c they were rather tricky to drive, while completely hearsay (I have never driven a 350Z with the Tilton) the YouTube videos of the car revving are insane. I want a Tilton setup for my soon to arrive 370Z. Tilton if you are listening, PLEASE make them! |
I know Intense has one on a 350Z in there shop...

When I think of Tilton I think of Moton and Cosworth and then I get depressed. The only reason it would be tricky to drive is because they are super grabby and the flywheel is very light... thats asking to stall at every light unless you give it big revs at take off.

15lbs....Can you say chatter?
|
The 370Z must be pretty light also, b/c it is grabby and I do have to rev a bit out of 1st gear. I'm comparing that to the last few cars I've had, Mustang Cobra, Saab, GTI, Mini Cooper S.

^^ Hmm...actually, I was thinking that it must be fairly heavy. It was certainly heavy in the 350, and it 'feels' heavy in the 370 as well. But to be fair, I had replaced my stock flywheel in the 350 with a lightweight flywheel from Jim Wolf, so of course the stock 370 flywheel feels heavier. It might feel positively light compared to a stock 350 flywheel, which I haven't experienced in years. I did a little poking around on Google, and it looks like the stock flywheel is around 30 lbs., which isn't light. The JWT flywheel is 15.4 lbs, and it's 45% lighter than stock.

I use to have one in my 350z and it was definitely light, grabby, and noisy. As far as power though, they will hold more than any other clutch on the market that I can think of.
Tilton is still making them as the clutch is universal between two different applications (I think 8" and 10"), the flywheel is what mates the different applications to the engine. |
a light weight flywheel will definitely be something im looking into to..

I have one in my 350 and it revs like a bike. great for rev matching. a tap at the throttle will send the tach to redline. I can no longer drive vehicles with at least this much throttle response. It would be a shame if the 370 didn’t get something similar. the whole assemble weighs 16 lbs in place of the stock 50lb assembly.

The other problem with the Tilton is the clutch disc wear. On a 350Z 'street' setup, you'd have one cerametallic disc and one black carbon disc that would wear quickly. Even being careful with the clutch and not overevving the clutch, the black disc would take most of the wear. You could also use two cerametallic discs, but they are a true competition clutch- no slip at all! Either in or out. Tough to drive on the street.
