Excessive oil consumption?

If it still consumes oil, get another engine. You are not on the hook for a faulty motor.

Just remember, as others have mentioned, that oil consumption during the first 5000 miles is normal. It should be significant at first and slowly die down to practically nothing.

I'm still consuming over a quart per thousand miles @ 50k on the odo. Went through the same thing with my '06 350z with the rev-up engine, which was notorious for oil consumption issues.

Just feels like another typical Nissan experience.

That's impressive in a bad way, I use just a bit less then 1 quart ever 3k miles. And I just have 6k miles.

No kidding. I actually had to fill it with two quarts in a thousand miles a couple of months ago. The best part? It's all highway driving. Zero spirited runs since I've found it's consuming.

Oh well.

Gently broke in per the book. Just changed oil at 14k+miles. Zero added over the 8000mile interval. Mobil 1 5w-30. Used a bit until about 7,000mi. Seems like a good motor. 2010-Z.

Nice, Mobile 1 is good stuff.

Found a nice table of flash point temps for a lot of different brands.

How does this help? If it's oil blowby, then that's the source of the problem.

No. The exhaust tips get covered in soot almost immediately, though.

Been through it all before, like I mentioned... although the 350 didn't burn oil anywhere close to this. I read about G35's back in the day with 2qt/1k miles and thought it wasn't possible.

I had my oil change in may. today after 2,500 miles the oil level reads half way between the H and L. My understanding is that's about 1/2 quart lost. Should I be concerned? 17,600 miles on the odometer.

I wouldn't be concerned with 1 quart over 5k miles. Anything over that, though, would warrant attention.

You are correct in that the dipstick between the L and H is approximately one quart.

I would be worried about any oil consumption what so ever. my z was consuming a little oil
about 1/2 quart per 3k miles. tailpipes really dark with soot. I know it wasn't running rich due to being tuned. I have since sold my z and got a 2010 g37 that doesn't drink a drop of oil and the tailpipes are perfectly clean and have been for several thousand miles. I notice that the car runs much stronger than my z ever did even with g3's full berk exh and tune. in my opinion a motor should never burn oil if it is running properly. I feel that after break in if you are still consuming oil, you have a problem.

I agree- however, everyone needs to weigh the pros/cons of going down the path of service (and aggravation) with Nissan versus cleaning tailpipes and seeing a little bit of oil gone between oil changes.

I agree, dealing with service depts are a pain. most of the time they don't know what u r talking about anyway. it just stinks to have a new car like the z, and have it drink oil like an old vw.
