Help Teach me Car Parts!!
 

So yeah I've never grew up with a good knowledge of the whip game. Just basic stuff is what i've understood. Such as hp, torque, transmissions, etc.

I always hear about stuff like intake, test pipes, straight pipes, center pips, cats, cat back, headers, cams, etc. I have a basic understanding of all them, but not nearly as much as you guys

Maybe someone could send me a link to some site that could explain all these parts. Or even try your best to explain yourself.

Reason I'm asking is cuz I wan't to know wtf i'm talking about when I go to buy after market parts for my Z.

Another good website that has a wealth of information is j-body.org - the jbody organization. Sure, it's a Cavalier/Sunfire website, but a lot of technical information on how all of that stuff really works is on there. I hope that helps!

Intake=Colder air charge equates to more power. Because colder air is more dense more air enters the engine. This, in turn, allows more fuel to be introduced.

Exhaust=Exhaust is a bit more complicated. There are many different theories about how to make the most power. There are methods that produce more torque vs. HP. There are different matterials that provide varying weight savings.

I'm not even going to try cams or FI. There is plenty of information on both on hundreds of websites. A good rule is the more air you can move through an engine the more power it will make.

For your purposes all you really need to know is how to interpret a good dyno read out. Any reputable manufacturer will produce some quantifiable means of determining the benifit of there product. So, understand the technical readout is much more useful than knowing how the part works.

Also, that site HowStuffWorks.com is amazing. You should read EVERYTHING about cars. They have an EXTENSIVE auto section.

Do what I did: Join a car club. Been in a car club for 5 years and have since learned a LOT about cars... Most car clubs will have a good turn-out of people that build their own cars and know what they're doing (and some that don't. LOL). Learning from a forum is going to take you much LONGER to learn what you're asking. It takes time no matter what and lots of commitment, but if you're really serious about it, get yourself a project car, join a club, and get your hands dirty!
