370z Starting Issue
Hey Everyone,
I've been having this issue recently where when i try to start my manual 370z, i will push the clutch in (obviously) press the start button, and it will cycle through to the on position and instead of cranking, i will hear a wirring sound, i rinse and repeat a few times and it will eventually start. My battery is good, so I'm wondering what the issue could be. it's a 2011 370z with 100,500 miles on the odometer. My first guess would be probably the starter going bad. But wanted to get some other opinions before i brought her into the shop. Thank you |
Replace your key fob battery and have your car battery tested. Both can cause the issue you are having.

I was having this issue as well. First check the clutch pedal position switch to ensure the button is full depressed when the clutch is pushed to the floor. If it is, replace the switch. It could be that the switch is going bad.

Well, if it's make a whirring sound, it means two things.
1. The solenoid on starter is failing to engage. 2. you're gear teeth on starter or FW are worn out. (I doubt #2 is you issue, but you never know) Either way, you're replacing the starter. Since its not engaging, have an assistant start the car for you. At the same time, put your head in engine bay on driver side and listen for a distinct click. That should be the solenoid. If you just hear whirring, the starter is only turning not engaging bu solenoid. ***MAKE SURE YOU ARE IN NEUTRAL AND WHEELS ARE CHOCKED.*** Make sure battery is fully charged, since you have been rinsing and repeating a few times. |

I agree that due to mileage and only whirring sound that the starter is most likely at fault. A free tip would be to properly clean and tighten battery and starter connections paying attention to starter grounding. If that doesn't work try new starter or have the starter tested (which requires removal but gives you 2nd opinion before buying one). Good luck and hope that helps.
