Dealership won't do the gallery gasket job
My dealership refused to do the gallery gasket job even if I explained them my model year 2010 is concerned for the faulty gasket and that the gallery gasket part number was changed after. They simply told me Nissan prohibits removal of plate metal cover of oil passage (gallery gasket) and gave me a sheet of paper saying so.
What the hell? See attached pictures for proof. |

Try another dealer, or better yet find a reputable shop that has done this on Z’s before. Where are u located?
In the meantime, do you have an oil pressure gauge?

I think that they simply do not have the expertise on-site to perform the work. You need to remember that the new norm in dealerships is to hire auto technicians and not mechanics. Big difference. Replacing bolt on components is not the same as performing critical engine repairs.

LOL what? They must be joking.
Because the job involved requires removing AC gas, as well as the timing chain (thereby requiring the retiming of it) - I didn't dare do it myself. I called up the local reputable Nissan shop and they said they've done it, they'd do it no problem. IIRC, they charged me 6 work hours, material and other small stuff. Go find another shop, this one is a joke. |

If the above directions are only meant for rear timing chain replacement, I see why it would say never to remove. I have seen similar over the past 30+ years of reading shop manuals. That doesn't mean it can't be repaired as Nissan sells the parts.
What was that dealer's suggested method or repair then, new short block?

I just noticed one thing. The picture says: "Never remove plate metal cover". The first 370z series, before 2014 had this gasket made of cardboard-like material, not metal. The revised models and the parts nissan sells today are made of metal, but the first versions were not. Maybe ask them to explain their logic then.

It isn't advantageous for the dealer to only replace the gasket. They would rather sell you the whole cover. Jus saying.

I'm curious what are the actual failure percentages or rates. I've read so many different things and I think it's really hit or miss which ones fail. I stopped panicking about it some time ago, maybe it'll happen maybe it won't. However I highly doubt the failure rate is 50/50. If you're worried about it and want it replaced for good measure I'd just move to the next dealership lol. Good luck!

we had an 09 G37S coupe with 125k miles without any issues. Engine has been trouble free.... No steering lock issue also.

When I replaced my gaskets preventatively (due to many posts I read here), the shop said the gaskets looked as good as new (at that time they were at 10k miles and 11 years old).
I think it's easier and simpler to just install an oil pressure gauge, so that you can always monitor status and if everything's ok, no need to change gaskets. |

I've read it's a serious issue and I've read the failure rate isn't nowhere near as high as people make it out to be. My Z I've owned for almost 7 years and never had an issue. I guess some do and some don't lol

A couple of the screws could've been a bit tighter but asides from that they didn't needed to be changed. |
