Can anyone diagnose this?
Hi everyone,
2014 6mt sport/touring. Owned since 2016, about 85k miles now. Original clutch (highway miles, daily driver). Noticed a while back the car would make that rattling noise during clutch engagement only when moving from a stop. Used to be pretty infrequent, now it's becoming much more frequent. The entire car shakes, pretty violently sometimes. If I just give it more revs it does not happen. U joints seem ok, didn't notice any free play. Just seems like there is a lot of slack somewhere in the driveline and it's getting worse. 350z I owned previously had a similar issue, but it was much more mild and much less frequent, and it was just noise, no uncomfortable shaking. No bolts are loose, all bolts (axles, driveshaft) checked with a torque wrench, everything is within spec. Has anyone experienced this? Maybe it's normal Z stuff and I'm getting too old for it? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Link: https://photos.app.goo.gl/JKAA7kB6Bbinppef8 Sent from my Pixel 7 using Tapatalk |
I've got the exact same type of behaviour on my car and I noticed it was more noticeable if I drove the car harder (higher revs, quick shifting). After a while it gets back to normal. I suspect it's the clutch getting worn. Unlike your car, my car has super low mileage though, but the previous owner was an old dude whom I suspect probably burned the clutch while taking off or during parking, so regardless of the difference in our mileage, I would guess it's that.

I have the 2014 Nismo 370. This sounds to me like the car has a Ceramic 6 puck race clutch in it. This is the engagement I have with the middleweight flywheel from Z1. Could be that the clutch is worn too, but you also might not have the dual mass flywheel in it any longer. The rattle noise is standard with this type of aftermarket clutch and flywheel setup. The test is to push the clutch pedal in and the rattle noise should go silent until you begin to engage the driveline.
Hope this helps. |

Could be a clutch disk out of balance/damaged springs
Burn spots on the flywheel Bad pressure plate Sounds like the problem is clutch related and being that it's getting worse it points towards disk or plate. |
Thanks for the advice everyone. My initial guess was the clutch just based on the miles I've put on it, but I haven't abused it and thought I'd could go longer.
As far as the 6 puck clutch... I doubt it. Car was purchased bone stock with under 20k miles from the original owner. I'll look into a new clutch I guess. Thanks! Sent from my Pixel 7 using Tapatalk |
