Rough shifting 7AT
 

Just a quick question for those that have the 7AT. When you are driving it cold does the transmission shift rough as well as shift up too soon or hunt for the gear it should be in? Mine seems to do it, I don't drive it hard when it's cold, I'm pretty easy on the gas pedal until it gets up to normal operating temperature. I'd like to find out if it is just me or is there more of this going on out there. Thanks!

so far i haven't noticed much issue with the shift points. i've been driving in everything from 10 degree weather to 70 degree weather this winter. my car either sits in an underground parking garage or inside my attached garage however.

In D Mode without the paddles, it always going to the higher gear so if you happen to quickly give it gas it has a slight hesitation to downshift to accelerate, That's normal for the Transmission to do that. I just drive most of the time with the paddles and control the shifts myself.. I have not noticed any changes in cold weather temps Here in Cali it was recently 47 degrees, cool for some but cold for us..

Thanks for the reply, it isn't too bad, it just seems to want to shift to a higher gear at a low RPM. Maybe for fuel economy, dunnoe, but it seems harsher and more prone to do it when it sits overnight and driven in the morning rather than when it has warmed up. Oh well, thanks again!

Well,the 7 speed unit on our cars,is a 'bit' on the rough side due to it's sporting nature[lock up],compare to an Lexus or BMW unit.

True, that is what I figured but I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't just me. :)

I drive with the Paddle shifters most of the time but I agree when driving in (D) at low speeds it can be jerky. I usually lightly roll into the throttle at lower speeds seems to help make the car shift smoother and keeps it from skip shifting into a gear you weren't expecting.

On a Side Note:
An unexpected result from my ERZ HFC install is throttle response is so good now that when in (D) the car has become a lot smoother at low speeds. The Auto has pretty aggressive short 1st - 3rd gears so when cruising around town at low speeds the car can be jerky. The added throttle response and torque has smoothed the lower gears out.

Has any of you guys heard anything 'bout Nissan throwing in the CVT??!! At my age, that would be a godsend! Greetings from too-warm Puerto Rico.

My 7AT shifts very smooth in D most of the time, but notice some lower speed shifts can sometimes be quite positive. In M it's really positive, especially 2 to 3 it's like a kick in the ***. I love it.

I agree, mine is the same way when in the lower gears and slow speeds. It usually is smoother once it has warmed up to normal operating temps.

Actually noticed rough downshifting right out of the dealer's parking lot. Usually happens with the lower gears though...doesn't matter if it's cold or warmed up. It's definitely more prevalent when the tranny is switched to "Manual" mode. I think it's safe to say that it's just a characteristic of our cars.
