OFFICIAL OIL THREAD (Trying to clean up all these useless oil threads)
So over my time on the 370z forum, ive seen so many pointless threads on oil. "what should I use?", "What is Ester?", "Does an OilCooler help?" etc. These people are pretty much forum noobs that dont know where to look, just to lazy to look, or just want to get known for being dumb on the forum.
Im going to try to clean this all up to the best of my ability (if any one see's somthing wrong, please Let me Know :ugh2: ) Do Our Motors REQUIRE ester oils? NO! only recomened. What is Ester? -Ester oil is synthetic base oil that has been chemically synthesized. Typically ester oils are used in passenger cars . Esters are one of the classes of synthetics . Esters are stable molecules, provide good solvency, and provide very good low temperature and high temperature performance in engine oils. Will an oil cooler help? Unless you take your car to the track, save your money, i promise your car wont blow up unless your a serious fast and furious enthusiast. Base Nissan Ester oil- its made for our car so its ok for our car, it wont destroy your motor like people say just because its conventional oil, it just wont last as long as synthetics obviously and may lack on the performance end. Mobil 1- in my opinion one of the best "Walmart" off the shelf oils, its reputable, ive used it in 3 cars and have never had a problem and it gets great user reviews. Castrol Syntec Edge: Believe it or not many people are saying this is now better than mobil 1, (be your own Judge i havent used it but plan to in the future) They claim 8x more protection then Mobil 1. RedLine: in my opinion, in the top 3 for our car, its an ester base synthetic (recomended for our car) that is a performance oil as well with maximum protection. AMSOIL- Engineered to outperform all conventional gasoline engine motor oils. Reduce heat, friction and wear for maximum power, performance and fuel efficiency. Clean engine formula. Resists high temperature break down that forms sludge and varnish. Lasts longer and offers better protection. Ideal for hot and cold climates Others: lucas oil, Penzoil Platinum etc. Hopefuly this helped and if i missed anything please let me know! |

oil change question
Hi I parked my car for the winter end of November and did a fresh oil change with redline 5w30 and k&n filter. I just re insured it, is it ok if i drive around with this oil or do I have to change it again ?
|
Oil change, I searched already :)
Okay, so it is my understanding that all 16 rivets / tabs need to be removed and also a low profe or ramp needs to be used to change oil. My questions are what oil do you guys use? My choice is Penzoil Plat fully synth 5 30W with Bosch oil filter. More importantly, my car currently has 1600 miles on it, when would be the best time to change the factory oil? thanks so much.

Oh-oh.......................................here it comes.............

Use Google and put "the370z" in the search field... :tiphat: |
It will be ok, but I would not let it go for very long. Oil that sits for a long time can degrade over time. At the end of the day, treat your Z right.......get the oil changed. Frequent Oil Changes is the one thing you can do to lengthen motor life.
You can never go wrong by changing your oil. BTW, I too store my care for the winter. I change the oil before storage and change it again soon after I take it out of storage. |

There are quite a few that use Redline, Mobil1, Castrol or brands as long as its marked FULL SYNTHETIC since the VVL is dependent on this to keep the valve-train quiet. I would just change it and recommend 5k interval oil changes. |
Ok I will drive it for a week then change it thanks.
btw 5k miles would normally be a good time to change the oil with redline correct ? |
Oil change
Hey guys I've had my car for about 8 months now and have 1700 miles on the car. When should I change the oil on the car if I drive it rarely?
|
I did my first change at 1,000 miles. I only do about 6,0000 miles per year so I change mine every 6 months.
Manual says every 3,750 or 3 months. I figure that since I am under on the mileage that 6 months is close enough. Since I drive it regularly I am not going to change every 3 months. |
Depends on how you drive, what kind of oil (and filter) you use, environmental conditions, &c. For warranty purposes, stick to the 3750mi/3month schedule. If you are not worried about the warranty, I'd suggest changing every 4-6 months unless you have reason to believe it needs more frequent changes.

Oil does have an "expiration date" - the oil breaks down over time. Plus there is a good chance that you have some condensation in the engine, especially if it is stored where the temperature fluctuates. Personally, I'd change the oil/filter before starting the car after a long storage period (> 3-4 months). When in doubt, change it. You can't change oil/filter too often. |

Oil doesn't break down over time in storage, but condensation does accumulate. You can change your oil in the spring to get rid of that little bit of water, or you can drive it to boil it off. Personally, I wouldn't bother with changing it. The reason to change oil is if and when acids and combustion byproducts accumulate, or if the additives break down from shear. That's a function of use, not time.
