Oil Temp Sensor?

My oil temps have been recently bouncing around a bit.

Oil temps sitting at 165F on a 70F day, I'd do a mild acceleration of maybe 4k in every gear and the temp would jump to about 210-220F for a split second before immediately falling down to 165F again.

It only did this twice (the second time was with a similar acceleration) but I haven't ever noticed it jumping like that before.

I hooked up an obd2 reader to the car at idle and found that my coolant temp was holding at 196F while my oil temp was at 165F.

I was wondering if this difference in value was normal. I'm running a 6.5 qt oil pan with an oil cooler, but I would have thought the temps would still be closer to each other with the oil being slightly warmer.

I thought maybe the oil temp sensor might be a good place to start but any thoughts on what could be going on are appreciated.

Water temp and oil temp don't follow one another for the most part. You have a thermostatic plate installed?

Yeah I think so.

Where the lines that run to the aftermarket cooler hookup?

The car is still kind of new to me but my temps seem very low compared with others I've seen.

Even on the hottest days in FL I'd never see it get above 180F.

Even driving it harder than normal

Where the oil filter goes. The plate between the block and the filter. Do you know if it's just a plain plate or the thermostatic plate?

Yeah I'm not sure about that one Rusty.

Definitely a plate there but how can I tell?

^this is the car, not sure if the info about the oil cooler narrows it down.

What were thoughts about the plate?

Also forgot to add. I was recommended to run either 10w-40 or 0w-40 by the first owner.

It's got 10w40 in it now and this is the first cold season I've had with the car.

I thought maybe certain parts of the engine weren't getting lubricated as well (with the thicker oil) and were getting hot on those accelerations. Then the oil would flow over them, spike the gauge, and then fall as the oil cooled.

But these spikes lasted only a second, strait up and strait down and I wouldn't have thought they could really rise and fall that quickly.

Your oil temps are fine. They are acting normal for a car with an oil cooler. Since you have an 09 it never came with one from the factory. ban25 added it as he should have done.

Ok thanks Spooler. It just hadn't done that since I've owned it and wanted to be sure nothing was wrong is all.
