Starter cranking
If one wanted to just crank the engine with starter, (fuel pump fuse pulled)
with a push button start, how do you stop it from cranking or is there an automatic shutoff? They always tell me there are no dumb questions, only dumb answers, so I'm ready for the beating. ZZ |

Take out starter relay and using some jumper wire or needle nose pliers, jump the relay connecting terminal 30 and 87 with ignition on. You can control cranking length as you wish.

You would need a remote starter button off the Snap-On truck. Problem solved. I can't remember what the exact name they use. I have one in my toolbox somewhere. Use it for compression testing, valve adjustments, etc.

Arrived in mail today from Snap-on, in only two days.
Is there enough metal showing or aligator clip will go deep enough on 'S' switch once connector is removed? or do I have to jimmy rig a plug-in for the 'S' contact on starter? (sorry car cover is on and I'm too tired to remove and open hood. or remove engine splash shield. ) TIA zz |

If you want to crank the engine for about 10 seconds without starting, you don't need any tools or have to remove any fuses. Our cars have a "clear flood" mode.
With one foot pressing on the brake (or clutch to the floor) use the other foot to hold the accelerator pedal to the floor, then push start. The engine will crank for about 10 seconds, and will not start as the fuel injectors are turned off. Also no codes will be set. I have done this many, many times on my G37 while researching how quick oil pressure builds. If you want to have fun with your buddies car or on a test drive, use this method the next time you start it. I did this when I drove my friends brand new Maxima. I thought it was funny, and he thought his car was broken! Note: Based on some testing, this doesn't work on all cars. When I tried it on my old 2001 BMW 530, the engine raced towards redline for a moment. |

I had a look at the starting circuit wiring diagram last night. Simple enough system. Read nothing about this feature, but will look again. Thanks again. |

The start sequence should abort if the engine does not start in 5-10 seconds. If it doesn't, press the start button to manually abort (may have to press and hold). But my memory ain't what it used to be so verify with Owner's Manual or FSM. OM PDF at Nissan's web site if you don't have printed copy that came with car. Link to FSM in my sig.
If all else fails, let out the clutch with foot firmly on brake pedal and transmission in gear. Or get a remote switch as recommended above. If this is a one-time job, many auto parts stores will loan/rent you one.

I am only aware of if after watching a ScannerDanner video a few years ago, and thought that I should try that to see if it works on my G37 - It does! |
