And yeah I would have thought it is what it is with blow by, but the burn off rate was doubled with the 0w-40 compared to the 10w-40 and there's no way the properties of the oil aren't factors with such a significant change.

I only discussed the valve train noise because the thicker oil also seemed to run quieter than the thinner oil (lubricating things better).
Hmmm, "double the burn rate".... that is very interesting.

I guess that you will have to try different oils and see what works best for noise & oil consumption. I wish you luck!

I recently switched to running the 5w-40 T6 compared to the Mobil 1 10w-40 high mileage.

I found that it burns off significantly faster than the M1 (about a quart every 2500 miles). Temps never get above 180 with the oil cooler and the car holds an extra 1.5 quarts over stock.

I would have thought the thinner oil would have lubricated the upper parts of the engine more effectively but the slight increase in noise is leading me to believe a thicker oil is actually better for my case.

Any thoughts on this appreciated

Can you contact the shop who built the motor? Ask them what oil they recommend. Usually, a good engine builder will know what issues like blow by etc will occur with the looser tolerances and know what type and weight oil can help mitigate it. As far as having to travel with extra oil on long trips, I might be old, but I do that for every vehicle I’ve ever owned including stock ones, as well as coolant/distilled water, etc, all the basic **** in case it’s needed.

The reason you are burning oil is more than likely due to the ring gap was set too large causing this issue. Normal for a Forced induction car. There is a fine line setting the ring gaps. Too large and oil consumption and blow bye is an issue. Too tight and sticking a ring due to the extra heat of a FI car. My first built engine burned a little bit of oil. My new one does not. This issue could have also been due to improper break in procedure. You are going to burn oil due to the reasons above. Nothing is going to stop it unless you have it built again properly.
