Dis-Connecting Battery For Storage?
I will be storing my 370Z for the winter. There is no electricity where it will be stored so I will be removing the battery. What memories will be lost? Is losing the ecm data a big deal?
|
Not a big deal unless you plan on racing as soon as you start it up. You'll lose radio presets on some year models. Might need to reset the auto-window function. ECM will lose some tuning data but it only takes about 15 minutes to relearn (car may run a little rough at first). Transmission may lose some data but I'm not sure.

Is it OK to just start the car once a month and let it get up to temp?

IIRC, there is also a shipping "switch" in the fuse block that kills power to a lot of stuff to reduce battery drain. FSM will tell you how good my memory is and exactly where the switch is (if it actually exists). Link to FSM in my sig. |
In my experience, the Z doesn't use that much electricity when not in use. I would just leave it alone (instead of running the engine for a few minutes monthly) during winter. How long is it going to hibernate?

4-5 months. Are you saying just leave the battery in?

If you have/use Syncho rev match feature, be sure to turn Sport mode back on.

I've stored mine in cold storage for the past 6 years. You will lose radio presets, windows will need to be reset, and the clock on the gauge will be gone. That's it. All nav presets and other stuff will work like normal. Let the car idle for a solid 5 minute sminimum upon first startup in the spring to get rid of any moisture buildup, let fluids circulate properly, and allow the ecu to relearn stuff. I've personally never had the car act weird after sitting for 6 months, but it doesn't hurt to just let it run. I replaced the OEM battery last year with an interstate one. The OEM was 10 years old. And 6 of those 10 years have been in cold storage. (-20f) during winter. I've never had to jump the car or anything upon initially startup in the spring. |

Be sure to put steel wool in your exhaust tips so critters don't mistake your muffler for a nice home.
