At what point do you stop because of high temperatures?

Recently Houston's been hot. On my way to work It was around 100~F the entire way. To make things worst I was going 3mph~ because of road closures. At first I noticed the AC get really hot, then noticed the Coolant gauge was 5 dots from max. I turned off the AC and audio and it was still creeping to 1 dot from max and 260F oil temp, at that point I drove off and parked for some time before moving.

Was it necessary for me to stop or was it alright to keep going?
My Z is boosted with an oil cooler and expanded oil pan (6.5-7L).

Once there was steady speed (25+mph the temps dropped fast)https://imgur.com/a/W7Ti5jA

Maybe want to ck your electric fan’s & ensure both of them are working, also check for any debris between oil coolers & radiator.....be sure you don’t have them mounted to far apart; as this will cause a turbulence effect & air won’t flow directly through :ugh2:

Zoren 370 07-12-2020 04:40 AM

That is definitely not right... With oil cooler your temps should not go that any high. My Z will sit in traffic in FL and the oil temp stays highest at 220F

How many rows of oil cooler you have? jC is correct you might want to check your fans if they are running normal speed. They might not be functioning.

To top it off you even have an extended oil pan..maybe your oil cooler lines are clogged?

Check fuse and fan connectors. I have seen such a case with electrical connectors that looked connected but did not "click together".

I just went to check, my fans are hella painful to touch when the car is on. My oil cooler is a GTM 34 row :/
I can't think of reasons why the temps would get that high.

Yeap, common issue with a TT car. You need to install the Trackspec vents. All 3 of them. Solves this problem of lack of air flow. You can get the heat out from under the hood. This is the exact reason I have them on my car. I have had no issue.

Your tuner may be able to help you out. Eg, have fans come on sooner, richen AFR a little when hot, retard timing when hot, etc.

That won't do much. I did a CSF triple pass and the Tracspec vents. I tested it last summer in August. Was stuck on the interstate in stop and go traffic. What I did worked like a champ. It didn't even phase the car. You would have been surprised to see the heat plume coming out from the vents. It was crazy.

How is the car during rain/car wash? That's my main issue with hood vents. This car is also my daily.

No issues. If you want to stay cool, you will put the vents in. I didn't want to but I knew what would happen if I didn't.

If you are really concerned, PM Rusty and see what he might charge you for making a set of rain guards for the TracSpec vents. :tiphat:

3 vents. $40 for material. $40 for my time. Plus shipping. Takes me a few hours to make and paint.

Bonnet vents are a band-aid. Fit a better radiator. Make sure the cooling fan works (duh).

Spooler 07-15-2020 09:12 AM

It is kinda funny that folks with a NA car are chiming in. It is very difficult to keep a turbo car cool in stop and go traffic in the extreme summer heat.

JARblue 07-15-2020 10:06 AM

A better radiator and fans would be a nice solution. Too bad there isn't one. Except maybe Ron Davis? Which is $$$

Or, you can suck it up and get a CSF that will last 2 yrs or so. LOL It's just a cost added into a turbo cars maintenance. Daily driving a modified car is not cheap.

They are a bit more than a bandaid from what I've noticed with mine.

I've been dealing with heat issues here in El Paso as well. Peak ambient temps for the past week and a half were at around 105°F to 110°F.

I had waterless coolant and hood vents and this was the temps I had just driving home by the time I pulled into the driveway: four dots from max, 237°F (coolant), and 240°F oil.

I am in the process of switching to distilled water + water wetter. So far, the initial test during the first flush with just water had way lower idle temps: 208°F coolant and 203°F oil temp. Just need to remember to switch to 50/50 for the winter.
