Ecutek tune
I have a local VQ tuner here thats barely starting up. He is offering me a free tune/ sponsorship with me having to stay committed to him and bringing my car to him every-time i add a mod. We will be going the ecutek route, the only thing is i would have to pay for my own license. My question is, if i end up not liking the tune or he ends up being unreliable, can i take that same license somewhere else? Or will my license be locked in his ecutek master cable? He doesnt have a dyno so we would be doing data logging doing street pulls if that matters.

The license will stay on your ECU

If he doesn't have a dyno, forget about him and find someone that does. There is too much to risk in having someone that is ill equipped to analyze and recover from their mistakes to try to save money on a damn tune. Their is no substitute for real experience over someone that is trying to fake it until they make it. This is the kind of decision we later call teachable moments.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a street tune from a competent tuner. There is no real need for a dyno when tuning a NA Z. That being said, OP's tuner sounds inexperienced to say the least. I would feel much more comfortable doing a remote tune with Seb at Specialty Z.

What shop are you dealing with? Just curious mostly. I have some work completed by Precision Garage and Racing. They are very competent but Seb at Specialtyz does all my my tuning and is building my motor. He has a dyno if you want to make the drive or he can remote tune you. He is one of the best if not the Ecutek tuners and has remotely tuned Zs all of the world!

I’m ok with letting him tune my car. He will be giving me free retunes as well if i add ported manifolds or decide to go e85. Basically using my car as a guinea pig. My main concern would be being able to take that same license and using it somewhere else like specialty Z if i dont like the work CRG does on my car |

If you needed heart surgery, would you want the most experienced cardiac surgeon you could find, or would you go to a teaching hospital bc its cheaper? Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk |

I got a free tune for a guy that mostly does Miatas and wanted to break into the Z tuning market with Ecutek when it was brand new to the platform. He promised a lot and delivered on very little. He was too busy with the Miata platform and it was impossible to ever coordinate with him for additional tuning when I added mods or the dyno comparison that he promised me. Per our agreement I still owed him $175 for the actual license, but he couldn't even be bothered to return my phone calls to take my money when I tried to reach out to him. I bought a cable so I can data log on my own and moved on to Seb at Specialty Z for all my tuning needs. Well worth it!! |
