Squealing sound on cold temperatures 370z 2010
Hi there,
I have a issue with my 370 z giving a Loud squealing sound when the engine is cold or accelerating at higher speeds . Sounds like these - check the video. https://youtu.be/yGiClVuVFqY Already took to the dealer and after 3 trips to the dealership and spending $700  it’s still doesn’t go away. The dealer asked me to change steering pump and tensioner which I did and after 2 days it’s back again. Any help on finding what the exact issue will greatly be appreciated . Thanks Kp |
It only does this when cold outside? Mine makes a weird squeal for a second on cold starts when chilly out. Only for a second though. Kinda bothers me but meh. To me your video sounds like a belt? I don't know much though..

Hi Cory,
it happens until the engine is warmed up enough and even when i have A/c on this squealing noise comes back again. which belt are referring to? alternator? KP |
This definitely sounds like a squeaky belt. Take a gander down the front of the engine. Do all the pulleys look lined up? I suppose it could also be a bearing going bad on one of the accessories. Since you replaced the power steering pump and tensioner already, I guess you can eliminate those.

Thanks for the tip. but i have no way to go under engine, no right equipment's .
so, changing the belt will do the trick ! |

is it the accessory belt/drive belt(serpentine) or compressor belt that needs to replaced?

Sorry Guys..i Just checked my receipts from the dealership . they did change the drive belt and looks like that didn't do the trick as well. Any other suggestions.
|
Did they replace the tensioner and all the pullies? I had to replace mine at 75k miles. They were all raising cain.
|
Yes- belt tensioner and power steering pump along with drive belts. not sure this covers any pullies?
|
Get it checked out by a real mechanic. It sounds like the dealership is just making guesses and changing parts. Doesn't have to be a Nissan or 370Z expert; just a real mechanic.
|
I did take it to the other mechanic. Seems like the pulley on the steering pump that was replaced by the dealership was defective.

Well the mechanic said the Pulley comes with steering pump (set) and the one making the squealing noise is coming from the pulley.
|
Did you ever get to the bottom of this? I'm at 68k and I'm also getting squealing on cold start (but not on acceleration or AC). My mechanic replaced the pulleys, tensioner, and belts, and it's still squealing on cold start.
Now he thinks it might be a bearing going bad on the alternator or a pump. It goes back into the shop this week to find out. |
No, the mechanics are still clueless. Seems like a mystery till now. let me know how your diagnosis goes.
|
Finally found the squealing. It was the starter, which needed to be replaced. It's been about a week and it's not squealing anymore.
|
Cool. how much did you end up paying for the starter motor?
|
I'd have to double check, but between $450-$500 before labor.
|
The issue with mine is not discovered yet. Going to 3rd mechanic this time. let's see.
|
I'm not sure how much to believe my mechanic that he did this, but considering he fixed it, maybe I should: He had me leave it overnight in his shop so that they could get a solid cold start, opened the hood and had three other mechanics with stethoscopes on likely culprits to figure out where the squeal was coming from.
