It's all about what you are going to ask of the car. I went years without one on my Z. Did fine for daily driving. But if I wanted to really hammer on it for more than a few turns, she started pulling timing really quick, especially in the Texas summer heat. For example, the one time I got it out on the track while she was still my daily, I did one warm up lap and by the third full speed lap (with traffic) she was in limp mode on the back straight at COTA. I backed off right away and only experienced any rev-limiting at 5000 RPMs.
Now that I no longer daily drive the Z, I am looking to get her out on the track a lot more. So I purchased a 34 row Fast Intentions oil cooler that will allow me to do more than 3 laps at full speed  |
If you’re running a thermostatic plate, maybe it’s not opening at all or enough.

2 options for an oil cooler. Z1 34 row, or the FI 34 row. |
So I just tested the sandwich plate and it works fine. The lines all look fine with no kinks either.
Am I really just beating on this car so hard? I have a pressure gauge on order probably going to mount it in the cubby. And going to fab up some simple baffles. It's not like I'm in AZ like Hotrodz |
Trackspec Hood vents worked great! It took much longer to get to peak temp (240F Oil, 208F Coolant) Air temp was around 58-68F all day so that helped a lot too. Still going to duct and relocate all the coolers, engine, oil, and PS.
