From the maintenance car bibles:•If you do decide to change, only go up the scale. If you've been running around on synthetic, don't change down to a mineral-based oil - your engine might not be able to cope with the degradation in lubrication.

I'm not sure I buy in, sounds like a rumor the oil companies spread to keep us buying expensive oil :D

Who should we trust really? I mean, even if you find a cat whose been in the business 40 years, the guy lives and breathes whatever it is he's good at, there is always some other coot whose also been in the business 40 years who says something different as well.

Congrats on the buy. Yea your dealership sounds like mine. They wanted me to bring it in at 10,000km. I said "hell with that ill do one at 3500km" They asked me "why would you do it so soon ans waste the money" I did the oil change at 3500...it was pitch black with metal shavings in it. I brought the dirty oil to them and said "thats why"

Well, I for one would sooner trust the fellow members on this board than the WSJ. Or for another example, if Sharif from Forged said xyz about some issue pertaining to our cars, I'd place more weight on his opinion than the WSJ's. But maybe that's just me. *shrug*

Generally speaking, OK sure. But in this case their advice was fine.
