My first guess is the belt has gotten old and is slipping.

+1 A old worn out belt, worn out idler pulley, and worn belt tensioner would be the culprit more than likely check out all these.

The sound is more of a metal rubbing on metal

How many miles are on the car? I have seen throwout bearings and Pilot bushings cause this issue. Most of the time it was the pilot bushing.
