Default Oil Cooler.....Trans Cooler...

If one was to get an oil cooler, which would be the "best" kit to put on? (I say best knowing there is no true best)

I'd like one that would route oil to the cooler in the event that the temps get hot and can keep the oil temps below 240F in Oklahoma with the sun out and it being 100F or higher, but in cooler weather, it doesn't push oil through the cooler.

Tracking...who knows, I may eventually / occasionally put it on a track...mostly just aggressive (when appropriate) street driving.

I'm also curious about transmission coolers - any kits out? Any on the horizon (if not) - just wondering...

Most commonly available Thermostatic plates route oil to the cooler no matter the temp. Most kits do not even offer thermostatic control so buyer beware.
There are numerous threads on this as well as solutions for overcooling in the winter. See my cooler install link in my sig. From Mocal (the most commonly used thermostat):

Quote:
Mocal oil thermostats are designed to regulate oil flow
through cooling devices until optimal (minimum)
temperatures are reached. Cold oil enters the
thermostat and is bypassed through the center of the
unit returning to engine (figure 1). During warm-up
the thermostat never closes off oil flow to the cooler,
rather, it offers a less restrictive path for the oil to flow*
allowing the cooler to acclimate to system
temperature. As oil warms to 180 degrees (200 in high
temp versions) the operating "waxstat" closes the
bypass permitting full flow to cooler (figure 2).
*percentage of oil bypass can vary up to the point
where the bypass is closed and full flow to the cooler
is achieved.

Interesting, so even with a "good" thermostatic, it'll still flow oil through the cooler?

Is mocal considered one of the most reliable/best of the thermostatic plates?

Do trans coolers require drilling/tapping? I'd rather avoid that if I can!

Yes and Yes

I have often considered something like this.....

The one in the link is for a motorcycle, but the concept is there. A manually controlled valve to bypass the oil cooler. In mild months---or on the street---leave if closed. For the track, spirited driving, or the 20 days consecutive days in Aug in OK that stay above 100F, open it up. My folks live in Tulsa.
