Sputtered to Stop......Now Runs Fine.

Where's the OE fuel pump relay? It's not in the fuse box at the battery, by the ecu nor fuel pump and can't find it in the owners nor repair manual on Nico website.

179 miles into a 180 mile trip and with 1/2 tank of fuel (later physically confrimed) mine sputtered twice then turned off as if running out of fuel. I shut the ignition off then back on and didn't hear the fuel pump prime. The next day I went back to it, keyed on, fuel pump primed, it started and drove fine for the last mile to my destination.

New Fuel pump motor only (OE) and pick up sock replaced approx. 3k miles ago, never run the tank below 1/4 on the gauge, physically pulled the entire assembly a few minutes ago and it's full intact. No wires loose, no hoses coming off nor split, no junk on the sock and no crap in the bottom of the tank. No codes present.

Scouring the manual for a fuel pump driver module or relay etc. now. Kinda hesitant to drive home and get stuck on the highway.

Any other insight would be greatly appreciated.

Did you make a HARD long right turn, this is a Z fuel tank problem, not enoughf baffles all the fuel goes to the left side and starves the pump on the right, this has been reported to happen with 3/4 tank full, CJM ans Z1 motorsports has a solution for this, gl pal.

No sir, driving dead straight. cornered hard with less than a half a tank and never had an issue. I confirmed half a tank in the fuel pump side this morning when I pulled the assembly.

I’ll check into that fix for future needs though.

Did you check the lid of the IPDM? It shows location of fuses and relays inside the IPDM. The relay may be buried under something else. If it's not in the IPDM, the FSM (if you can find a copy; Nissan sent out take-downs to the sites that were hosting it) will tell you where it's located. Or wait a little bit and someone else will chime in.

I confirmed it is most likely an integral part of the IPDM and not individually serviceable. IE entire IPDM needs to be replaced to get a new fuel pump relay.

I took a look at the area where I sputtered to a stop and there was a (non-stop) right hander that bypassed the intersection. The wife was in the car so it was taken moderately at best, definitely not HARD. The car sputtered to the stop about 1000' later.

I confirmed 7 gallons of fuel in the tank upon filling it up last night before driving home 180 miles without issue.

If that sort of turn with 7 gallons of gas in the tank is going to cause this type of issue I'm incredibly disappointed with this car! And $500 for the Anti-Starvation kit from Z1 is a complete customer rip off for a pump that costs $65 everywhere online.

If you have a buddy that knows how to use a soldering iron (a dying art), he/she should be able to replace the relay.

I can do it but there's nowhere I can find that maps which is the fuel pump relay. I found which wires are ground and power to it but they're in separate harnesses within the IPDM.

I was also just reading the Track section of the forum where owners had secondary pumps mounted in the drivers side of the tank (LIKE the Z1 kit) and removed them due to overheating. I don't know that I'd have that issue considering I'm not tracking and never run the tank below 1/4 level though. Again, the Z1 kit is just very expensive for what's included, hard pill to swallow.


I'd love to find a solution using just fuel tank foam. Searched foam over in the track section and it doesn't look like anyone's been successful in that endeavor though.

Workshop manual shows it in the wiring diagram but not a physical location within the IPDM. I scoured the workshop manual, owners manual, google, this site, and FB yesterday for 2.5 hrs. to no avail.

Those that have installed the Z1 kit or the CJM RRP kit to my knowledge have never removed those kits once installed. Phunk's kit is bullet proof. I been running his kit for a couple of years now.

I believe you had fuel starve. You're not the first to have it or the last.

Oh I’m well aware of that issue. I’d love to know for sure though before throwing $500-1000 parts at it from Z1 & CJ only to find out its the pump, relay, cam sensor or crank sensor on the fritz.

Go to Autozone or O'Reiley's and get a free OBD2 scan. My hometown Nissan tech advisor I built a great rapport with told me it could possibly be my vtc sprocket sticking. My Z is @ 100k miles and I just installed new camshaft position sensors. Will get a thorough sensor scan at the Nissan dealership and update you.
