Seems like transmission technology hasnt quite caught up with the increased power levels...across almost all cars.

A warranty is a warranty where you are should make no difference, if it does I would contact Nissan Corporate maybe contact them now...

haha, yes, the new mustang GT has had a lot of transmission problems, as has the Camaro, Challenger, on and on. He's right, almost all cars using the TR6060 have had issues (Except GM fixed the 'vette with CF lined synchro's YAY! but it still suffers hydraulic issues if you don't change the fluid often).

Long story short, manual transmissions right now are not the best it seems, but they are the only way to go imo

Just wanted to update here:

Car now has about 33K miles, and 5th gear grind the same. Took it my dealer, who diagnosed it as synchronizers (as expected). New transmission on the way!

I really need to get my Z looked at. I still get an occasional grind in 5th. I worry about the dealer being able to replicate the problem as it doesnt always do it. How long did it take your dealer to actually diagnose the prob?

They drove it, then called to confirm the problem the same day - brand new transmission installed three days later.

I tested the new gearbox, and the problem is now COMPLETELY gone. I can even snap from 3rd to 5th without the slightest grind. Nice service, good dealer.

It would grind whenever I'd shift into 5th from 4th if I tried too shift quickly. It would ALWAYS grind from 2nd to 5th, no matter how slowly I tried it.

Problem completely gone now with new gearbox; even 2nd to 5th works fine (it takes ever-so-slightly longer than 4 to 5, but still amazing compared to the old shift).

Baker Jackson is the dealer here. They have a "performance tech" that looked at the car and figured out the problem. Didn't even have to drive it for them and no one challenged the diagnosis. Maybe this problem is well-known now; probably appeared in enough 09's they know the score.

Baker is a good dealership. They do a lot of performance work so they are probably one of the least likely dealerships to give you the run around.

Ugh, I really need to get my car into the dealership. It just doesnt happen all the time and I fear the run around due to all my mods. Since I have it off the road for the winter I should just re-insure it and drop it off at the dealer and be like "you fools figure it out".

Cool jay

whats the benefit or purpose of shifting from 3th straight to 5th or 2nd straight to 5th gear. I can see skipping gears on a down shift but cannot understand skipping on up shifts.

Rev high in lower gear. When rpms reach proper speed for 4th or 5th, shift. The benefit is fewer shifts, less wear on the clutch and syncros.

It cannot be less wear on the synchronizer; your shifting out of sequence and the 370z transmission has closed gear ratios, so you're causing more stress on the synchronizers. I am a mechanic and I have seen many people damage transmissions with mis-shifts and shifting out of sequence.

^^^ absolutely correct. skipping gears is greater wear on the synchros, especially big skips like 2nd or 3rd to 6th... 5th and 6th gear are probably just single brass synchros and are not going to tolerate it long before getting hard to shift into or crunching/scratching in... especially if you try to shift it at a normal shift speed versus doing it slow and letting the synchros slow it down and the rpms fall closer to match.
